Breastfeeding

Frantic baby while BF?

I don't know what's going on with DS lately. For about a week and a half to two weeks now he has been getting very frantic around 8-10pm (this is usually his last meal for a while since he'll sleep a good 4 or 5 hours afterward). He'll start flailing his arms and legs and start screaming his head off at the breast. It has become so emotionally and physically draining on me, it usually takes a few hours to feed him when this happens. For awhile I was just giving up after awhile and giving him a bottle of BM, but I've used up all of my freezer stash now and whenever I pump (if I get a chance to) I hardly get anything anymore. ?I've had to resort to giving him some formula when this happens because I have nothing left for him. I have NO issues during the day with feeding him, it's just at night that he acts like he hasn't eaten in days.I just don't know what's going on. I would say that maybe it's a growth spurt, but he did just have one around 5 weeks and it lasted about a week. Do you think it's just another one? I'm just soooo frustrated with all of this. ?Anyone have something similar happen? How did you deal with it? TIA

  • Mine did the same thing. He would get fussy and frantic during his last feeding for the day. I just nursed him as long as I could and then put him to bed. He still does it occasionally and I really think it's because he's tired and is fighting sleep.

  • I had issues with oversupply and DD never acted like that with me. From how you describe it, it sounds like you might be having supply issues (or the growth spurt is making him want more from you than your body is used to producing). I would do anything and everything to increase your supply. Drink lots of water and eat oatmeal (always worked for me if I ate it for a few days-my supply did start to go down a bit when DD was about 10 months old). Try to add another pumping session in after he goes to bed and/or first thing in the morning. Pump for a few minutes even if you get nothing out. This will help tell your body that it needs to produce more milk.

  • Just realized your dc's age and wanted to let you know that most babies do go through a 2 month growth spurt where they eat more.

    Good luck!

  • a lot of babies cluster feed at night to prepare. Maybe thats whats happening but your supply is to low. Try what pp said about helping to up your supply and let him nurse as often and as long as he wants. Stop suplementing too, that will cause your supply to go dow, even suplementing with bm.

Also ds had flow issues--we gave a him a bottle every so often and he would get mad and impateint when he tried to nurse bc it wasnt coming out fast enough like the bottle--try to cut out bottles for a few days and see if it helps GL

  • It could be a lot of things, especially that young.  He might just be tired, he might be frustrated because your supply is lower in the evenings, it could be a growth spurt.  My ds was often very frantic while eating.  I swaddled him a lot to calm him down and help him focus on eating.  It's best to let him nurse as much as you can so that your supply will meet his demand.  Hang in there--it gets much easier as they get older.

  • Drink more water, take fenugreek, eat oatmeal and either BF or pump at that time.  If you give him formula you still need to do something with yourself.  Pumping or BF.  You need to get your evening supply up.

I did not give any formula.  I just counted on my body to do what it could and increase the supply at that time.

It's frustrating, but this will pass.  He is growing and you are doing great.  My son was very fussy during growth spurts and there are so many.

Call your LC.  She'll have so many answers that you need and her phone consult should be free.

FEED, FEED, FEED, it'll feel like you do it for 16 hours somedays because that's what it takes.

You are doing well, it's been almost 2 months.
