I just picked up the newest edition of Baby Bargains today and have been going through it. ?My main focus right now is a crib (and other furniture) for the nursery. ?I'm having such a hard time because I only want to look at cribs that are rated "A" in the book. ?In doing that, the cribs that I like are the most expensive ones. ?Is anyone else finding themselves caught in the position of not being able to move past the highest ranked cribs and, therefore, considering some of the more expensive cribs? ??
Re: Baby Bargains - Cribs
I just finished the crib section too. I may go with a more expensive brand, but at least I will know it will be worth it. My favorite expensive cribs WERE Young American, but now I know they are made with chipboard and made in China - not a good value for the money at ALL.

Kind of...I was certain we would get our crib from JCP. My brother and SIL did and they love it. The prices seem great and so many people on here and IRL get them from there, too. I saw in BB that JCP has a C rating. I started looking at the stores with the A ratings and they were so pricey. I think I will stick to the JCP ones. It may not have an A rating, but I have talked to so many people on here and in IRL who really like their JCP crib.
That book is really good, though, huh?
We ended up going with a crib that got a B+ rating (AP Industries--hadn't even considered it until I saw it in the store). I think with the A ratings they're either really expensive or IKEA--which we considered but ended up not liking. And frankly, IKEA didn't seem all that stable to me when we checked them out in the store. I'm not sure it deserves its A.
I would focus not just on the grade but also on why it gets the grade it does--for example, for the brand we bought, the book complained that the cribs tended to be extremely expensive, at least $600, but some were made in Asia. Our crib was $300, which seemed pretty reasonable to me. It felt very very sturdy and had the other pluses the book recommends for cribs. I found it really helpful just to go to a big store (Buy Buy Baby) and wander through the crib section, and then compare what I was seeing to what the book said about a particular brand.
I only considered A and A- ratings.
We're going with the Babi Italia Pinehurst Espresso Lifetime Crib. It has an A rating (maybe A-, I don't remember), but it's available at Babies R Us. It's only $400. LOVE it! If you want the non-convertible, I think it's only $300.
I don't have the newest edition, but I actually only kind of used it to select our crib. Originally I wanted a Babi Italia based off of the ratings, but then when I selected the Babi Italia that I wanted, it had HORRIBLE online reviews. We ended up getting a crib by Baby Mod from Wal-Mart and I LOVE it. I think the brand only got so-so reviews in the book, but this specific crib has amazing reviews online.
That was one thing I didn't like about the crib section in BB. It didn't go over the individual models, just the brands and what I found was that some great manufacturers will have some not so great cribs and vice versa.
... read each section on some of the A rated cribs.. I know for a fact that.. Bonavita Cribs make models for Babies R us.. and Baby Depot.. Its Babi Italia at Babies R Us.. I actually have the Pinehurst Espresso.. and didn't know this before...
.. also Munire makes I believe Baby Cache.. you can find that at Babies R Us..
.. and Westwood makes Hart.. for Baby Depot.. and Bedford Baby at JC Penny! I'm thinking about getting a Bedford at JC Penny this time.
