Babies: 9 - 12 Months

babbling/teeth...connection?

my lovely DD just started babbling. up until now she just happily screeched (loudly...all day long)  I think it's too much of a coincidence that her babbling began within a week of getting her first teeth.  Has anyone else noticed a babbling/teeth connection, or is it truly just a coincidence?

Re: babbling/teeth...connection?

  • Not for us...he started seriously babbling at 8 months and is just now getting his first tooth at 11 months (almost).

  • My DD has been babbling for awhile and the pedi said that there are no teeth in sight!
  • not at all;  DD got her first tooth at 9 mos;  was babbling WAY before that.

hmm, DD just got her first tooth at 9 mos (days ago) and was not babbling WAY before that...or at all before that.   I guess she's just a late babbler.

  • Not for us. DS has always been a chatterbox but just cut his first teeth at 10 months.

  • Just for fun, let's think about this:

To babble, the baby has to add movement of his tongue, lips, and jaw to his currently mastered vocalizations....

My baby babbles mostly when eating.  My theory is the sensory input she receives at that time helps her feel those different parts of her mouth.  Therefore she is playing with them more - because she can feel them.

What if, maybe just maybe, the emerging tooth is increasing her awareness of her mouth - like it is waking it up - hence, she begins to play around with the motor component (as a result of the sensory input).

  • Not true for us...my girls have been babbling constantly since 7 months actual and at almost 9 months actual they STILL don't have any official teeth...though we are definatley teething. UGH..my one DD is pissed at the world b/c her mouth hurts...poor kid.
