Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Naps, how do YOU do it!!

Hi! My little one is 9 months, I have gotten into the routine of nursing her in the bedroom, then letting her fall asleep then putting her in the crib. What is your nap time routine? Do you think I am headind down a bad road for having to rock her down, or at least sleepy? Thanks!!

How do you get your baby down for nap?

Re: Naps, how do YOU do it!!

  • I used to rock DD to sleep in my arms and then I would transfer her (it only took about 30 seconds to a minute to do, so I didn't mind it!) but around the 6 month mark, she refused to be rocked, so I just put her down awake and she has fallen asleep like that ever since! I don't think it's necessarily a "bad road" to rock them, but obviously they should be able to fall asleep on their own at some point. Oddly enough, DD was able to tell me when she was ready to do that! And now we don't have a routine, I just put her down and say goodnight at that's it, Although I didn't mind rocking her, I must say, I much prefer it this way! ;)

  • Depends on the day & the nap.  I like to rock and nurse him since it puts him down immediately, but somedays he's just not having it so I just put him down.   If we go this route he usually talks and goofs around in his crib for a bit before he goes down.  This is usually the hardest part since the nap doesn't count until he's sleeping and often it ends up pushing the rest of the day's activities back.  I hope it's not a bad road to go down, because I think I'm headed that way too.  :)
  • I wonder the same thing you do re the "bad road".  I do rock DS to sleep for every nap, but its the only way I can keep him on schedule.  Just like pp, if I put him in the crib before he's asleep, he just pops up and starts smiling and laughing, and then his whole day gets pushed back and his bedtime ends up being too late.

I really wish I knew how to get him to sleep on his own for naps, I think I'll work on this earlier with DC#2 :)

  • I've fallen into a naptime routine that works for us.  DD will start fussing and sucking her thumb when she's getting tired.  I'll take her in her room, put on the sleep sack, and we rock while reading a book.

Like pp said, I used to rock her to drowsiness but now she prefers just to be put down.  She may talk and roll around for a bit but she seems to sleep longer if she goes to sleep herself.
