3.5 month old screaming at bedtime - help!

I have been reading these boards for a little while, and finally got up the nerve to start talking today.

My problem is this - every night right before bedtime my 3.5 month old screams unconsolably for around 30-60 min. No matter what I do. I am beginning to feel like we are doing something wrong.

We have a little routine. We change her into pajamas, try to eat the last bottle of the day (this is a struggle, she wants to scream instead) and then daddy rocks her to sleep in the dark.

We tried a nighttime bath - that just made her scream louder and longer, and I turn out all of the lights to make it calm. But nothing seems to stop her. I would love any suggestions.

  • maybe try doing some playtime before bed to wear her down a little?

  • It sounds like she is overstimulated. I would try putting her to bed a little earlier.
  • I am usually a reader as well, but your situation seems similar to one we went through so I thought I'd try to help.  What time does you LO go to bed?  We use a routine for our daughter (3 months old) as well.  It's a quick bath, diaper, lotion massage, pjs, bottle and ten minute rocking then putting her down in her crib.  I used to try putting her to bed around 830 pm but it seems she prefers an earlier bedtime, so I start her routine between 630 and 7 and have her in bed by 730 pm.  This has worked for us, as she is not overtired and seems to respond better to going to bed earlier.  Hope this helps your situation!

    Yep. I'm betting shes overtired.

  • Everything I read does seem to indicate that she is overtired.

However, she takes a little 20 minute nap at 6pm. Then she is all happy, awake and talking until she starts screaming at 7. We start the bedtime routine at 7pm every night. She usually goes down between 7:30 and 8pm, so I am not sure how much earlier I could try.

Should I try stopping that last cat nap everyday?

  • Hm...in response to the catnap, maybe 20 minutes is just enough to recharge her battery.  Since she is awake for an hour after that, I'd say maybe still try to move the bedtime hour up even just half an hour or fifteen minutes.  You'd be surprised at how much fifteen or thirty minutes affects a baby!  Audrey can only stay awake an hour and a half to two hours at a time, and then she needs a good nap that's just as long to stave off fussiness.  Sleep is tough!  Hang in there!
