Infertility

IVF Meds Question

I have my IVF consult tomorrow and the plan is to start bcps when I get my next period, which should be in about 3 weeks.  I have insurance coverage for ivf, including the meds.  My question is - can I just get these medications at my local CVS, where I usually get prescriptions?  I read about all these "boxes" of meds that come in the mail - is that just because it is cheaper that way if you are OOP? Or do regular retail pharmacies not carry this stuff?  I will be paying my prescription copay regardless, so just curious if anyone has gotten meds locally or if I will have to order them from a specialty pharmacy.  Thanks in advance!

Re: IVF Meds Question

  • loacal pharmacies normally don't have those meds. available, they would have to order them

and it depends on how your insurance works because of the type of meds. my insurance would rather I go thru a mail order and they even told me of a couple that they like better then others

I would talk to the insurance co. and see how they want you to handle it

    good luck

  • Regular retail pharmacies do not typically carry the IVF meds.  You will likely need to use a specialty pharmacy.  Your insurance company will likely have an "in-network" pharmacy that you will need to use in order to have them pay for it -- so be sure you speak with them and get use the right pharmacy.

     Good luck!!!

  • Thank you! I have the financial consult appt next week, I guess they will probably know about what pharmacies are best.  If not, I'll just plan to be on hold with insurance for an hour :-)
  • My dr said the meds have to come from a specialty pharmacy because they're injectibles...there are a couple specialty pharmacies in town, including a Walgreen's in the same building as my clinic, so you might look into that. ?Otherwise you have to do mail order.
