I either missed an episode or I fell asleep for the end of one.  I say the episode (or at least part of the episode) where Derek was operating on his former BIL and he put off the surgery for the PG woman.  The next episode I saw was Derek back at his motor home in the woods, getting drunk.

What happened in between?  Alex made a reference to him cutting half of the PG woman's brain out and then running out of the OR--did that really happen or was it figurative language?  What did happen?  Did he really flip out?

    It really happened. He kept trying to save a pregnant woman by cutting out more and more of her brain until finally someone (the chief, I think?) convinced him to stop and let her go. She died, the baby survived, Derek got sued by the dad, and he freaked out.

    There were some Grey's/ Private Practice cross over episodes, so maybe you watched Grey's but not PP and missed some of the drama.
