2nd Trimester

I lost my job.

I never thought I'd be the one saying that. I've been working for an insurance company for years, and our agency is getting a new agent starting tomorrow. He said I had great background and experience and was an awesome worker, but just not what he's looking for in his office.

I feel completely useless. My husband does not make the kind of money to support the two of us, and jobs in my area are slim to none. I have no idea what to do. I'm in total shock.

Thanks for listening.

  • I am right there with ya... today is my last day... at 5:00 I'm done...

it sucks... and DH works at Home Depot and can't support us on his pay alone... I do have an interview friday though... so hopefully... (I"m not the most qualified and being pg isn't the easiest thing to tell people whe you're job hunting...)

  • Oh no!  That is really too bad.  I hope that you and your DH figure things out soon.
  • Call unemployment right away.  I know in some states, if they consider it a layoff, you can start collecting right away.  This will at least help keep you on your feet until you can find something else.

    Good luck!

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • I'm sorry to hear this :( You might want to look into COBRA insurance to make sure you can continue to keep your health insurance. And like Jamers mentioned, unemployment.

Unfortunately in the state of Georgia, there is a "right to hire, right to fire" law. Basically, as long as it doesn't fall under the lines of discrimination, they can fire you for whatever reason they want to. I do qualify for unemployment, and my old agent is adding all of my vacation time/sick days to my last paycheck.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I hope I can bounce back quickly from this. It was completely unexpected.

  • Aww...I'm so sorry. That bites. Can you collect unemployment??

  • So sorry! With no advance warning, that must suck especially hard. Definitely look into unemployment compensation right away. Best of luck job hunting.

  • I'm so sorry. This seems like it's happening to more and more people IRL and here on the boards... GL at your interview! You don't have to tell them that your PG.
  • I am so sorry. I was laid off last year and had trouble finding another one right away. Put your resume on monster.com, careerbuilder.com and hotjobs.com. Linkedin.com is a great networking site for business professionals. They also post jobs on there. I am a Recruiter and these are the sites I use every day to find good candidates.

Best of luck to you and your family

This sounds so shady to me. Did he know that you're pg? 'Cause I'm wondering if that's "not what he's looking for in his office."

  • Thanks again ladies for all the kinds words and encouragement. This is why I love the bump. Hopefully things will work out, and when they do, you guys will definitely know!
  • I am so sorry. Embarrassed
  • I'm right there with you.   I was laid off recently too - it will all work out - just hang in there, and get your unemployment going right away!
  • I know EXACTLY how you feel...I got laid off in January, and was also completely in shock.  I loved my job and the people I worked with...but this economy sucks, and they had to let 3 of us go for financial reasons.  I didn't know where to begin looking, but after only 2 weeks, I was lucky enough to find a new job.  Can you collect unemployment?  Maybe you can watch a couple of kids during the day for some money..people are always looking for daycare.  Just remember this:  everything happens for a reason.  Good luck to you!

  • That stinks. I agree with one of the PPs that you should think about whether the kind of worker he doesn't need is one who's pregnant. It's possible that as a new agent (is this an independend agency?) he wanted to bring in his own staff, but did he let anyone else go? If not, I think his motives for firing you are very suspicious. It might be worth a call to an employment lawyer just to see if there is any possibility you have a case.

That aside, are agency jobs really that few and far between? I mean, more so than other jobs. My mom worked in an independent agency for quite some time. She had her insurance licenses etc., and they've asked her to come back a couple times since she left. Seems to me you could look at whether other agencies might need someone part-time, even. Even in this economy people still have to buy insurance.
