Poll - Prenatal Vitamins

Do you take prescription prenatal vitamins, or just over the counter vitamins?

My RE prescribed Folgard for additional Folic Acid.  When I was pg, she also gave me prescription vitamins, but never filled the prescription, as I m/c immediately.  I actually decided to fill it and take those as oppose to the regular Centrum I was taking... no real reason why.  I'm in the 2WW, and am very hopeful for this cycle.  I just want to be prepared.

Re: Poll - Prenatal Vitamins

  • I was actually prescribed Folgard today since my positive beta yesterday.  They said I need 4 mg of folic acid.  I am to take it twice a day, my precription pnv and baby aspirin.  All those are for my MTHFR, before that diagnosis I was just on Target brand pnv.

I took one month of Rx (primacare one) but they were discontinued.  My RE said that any over the counter multi is fine as long as I get 800mcg of folate or more.

I actually prefer this because I have high iron and have been told to take vitamins without iron.  All prenatals have iron, so instead I take a senior formula multi (no iron) and supplemental folate. I also take fish oil, a Rx vitamin D supplement, calcium, and mega-antioxidant blend. If I actually get pregnant I'll probably switch to a Rx prenatal assuming the iron situation can be sorted out.

  • I don't take prenatals.  I hate swallowing pills and the huge met pills that I have to take are enough for me, so My RE said I could take chewable Flinstone vitamins, so that's what I do!

  • i started out taking primacare, then due to a mix-up with the pharmacy, i started taking one-a-day prenatals until i could get my new rx.

my RE said they the over-the-counters don't give you enough folic acid - that there is a limit to the amount they can have in them.  so now i am taking prescription prenate.

  • I was taking Target PNV's but my RE just switched me to Duet DHA.
  • I take OTC prenatals.  Perfect prenatal organics.
  • I take OTC Target prenatals which have 800mcg of folic acid and also take 3 additional folic acid pills that have 800mcg each, so I'm getting about 3.2mg of folic acid.  If I end up PG I'd like to switch to a RX prenatal so I don't have to take so many dang pills.  I also take a Vit. C, B6, B12, CoQ10, Baby Asprin and 14 wheatgrass pills.  Thank goodness I'm a good pill taker.
  • I take OTC Target ones, and they seem to get the job done.

  • I take a prescription pre natal. They are free at meijer. So if you have one by you ask your dr. for a script and take it there. Meijer has a list of the ones that are free.

  • Yes, I take a prescription pre-natal called CitraNatal + DHA - it is 2 pills.  I have been on them now for 13 months.  They cost me $50 a month approx at CVS -  had I have known when I started them that we had MFI and that it would take us time to get PG, I probably would have not accepted the script and just taken an over the counter PNV ...  I do like them though and will just continue with them, unless my IVF RE changes them....
