how to choose mama cloth? glad, your expertise would be appreciated!

i have seen a few recs here. but i'm wondering which would logistically absorb better. cloth made with hemp, OBV, or terry? which would wash better? should i go for a pad with sewn-in channels?

any help narrowing this down would be appreciated! i could just buy one of each, but the shipping would cost too much.

  • I don't have a super heavy period, so take this for what its worth...

Your menstrual flow is tiny compared to a baby peeing in a diaper.  Unless you are talking post-partum bleeding, I wouldn't worry about it too much.  I have pretty thin pads sewn from whatever 100% cotton stuff I had around the hosue (old velvet curtains, cordouroy fabric, old cotton t-shirts) and I rarely have to change a pad more than every 3 hours- and I would want to change it after 3 hours anyway.

Darker colored stuff will wash better in my opinion.  Then you don't have to worry about stains as much (if you care).

you make a good point about the absorbency. although, i have a heavy flow since ds was born.

  • Ditto PP. I have very very sensitive skin, so I go for the softest fabric option I can get- OBV. It's always used on top of something else (hemp jersey, bamboo jersey, cotton knit, etc), but it's absorbent, super soft, and also antibacterial and antifungal which is good if you are prone to yeast.
  • I'm certainly not the mamacloth expert, but I'm happy to apply my other knowledge to help you.

Strictly from an absorbency standpoint, I'd go for hemp, then OBV, then cotton terry.  However, I'd be more inclined to use an AI2 for mamacloth vs. an AIO.  Mamacloth is much more challenging to clean, because of the nature of its task.  I'd rather have a design with a removable soaker.

    HTHS!
