2nd Trimester

weight question....yay!

My last 2 Dr. visits I weighed 9 lbs. more and this last one 5.5 lbs. All the others I had only gained 3 or 4 lbs. I read on average you should start gaining  a pound a week after a certain point. At the rate I'm going a pound a week will put me at 40 lbs. by my due date. The Dr. didn't mention anything about my weight so I asked if I ended up gaining 40 lbs. would that be really bad. She said that ideally she would like me to stay under 35. So I explained how I had read about the average 1 lb. a week and was worried that it would put me over 35 lbs. She said that I had only had a couple a big jumps here lately and that it's possible that I may not gain too much more. I just assumed that at every Dr. visit I would have gained more weight. She said not neccesarily. I could come in 4 weeks and still be that same weight. I'm not worried about it or anything and neither was she. This is just the first time I've heard that sometimes my weight may stay at the same number. Any one else heard about this?

  • If your doctor isn't worried then you shouldn't be either.  It is completely normal to have growth spurts and for other times to not gain.

  • I gained a couple lbs of bloat right at the beginning of my pg, then when I went for my 14wk and 18wk appointments I didn't gain anything at either of them.  I've been keeping track at home as well, and my next app't I will definitely be up about 7lbs... it caught up to me!  But when I didn't gain for 2 months my dr was not concerned.
  • I stayed the same weight between my last 2 visits. I went in today and gained 3 pounds.
  • She may have been talking about when you get closer to EDD. Most dr.s will see their patients every 2 weeks when it gets close (starting around 30 weeks). That way, you may not see a jump on the scale.

I haven't spoken to my doctor about it but this seems to be my experience.

I gained about a pound the first trimester, then I seemed to gain a few pounds all at once and then stayed the same, until I gained a couple pounds all at once again.  It probably has something to do with how much I drank/ate the day before I weighed myself but that seems to happen to me.  You are ahead of me though so who knows what I'll do next!

  • I think the 1 lb per week is a big estimation, but that it won't be exactly 1 per week, there will be jumps when the baby grows more and weeks when there is no weight added. I went down 10 lbs, in 1st tri, I am back up 5 now, I am sure it will all add up eventually to a healthy gain of 30 - 40 lbs.?
  • yes, I have heard of it. try not to dwell on it. at my last appt, i had gained seven pounds in a month. oops. but she really didnt say much, so I try not to freak out too bad.

  • That sounds like a lot in the 1st tri, to me, unless you started out underweight.  I hadn't gained any with DD until 24 weeks or with the twins until16 weeks (4 lbs).  But whatever- if you're doc is ok, you're ok.
