2nd Trimester

Caffeine guilt~

Okay I am feeling a wee bit guilty.....I drink one standard size cup of coffee (Brewed in my office breakroom) each morning.....

I also occasionally have a glass of iced tea a day. No soda pop (well at least very, very rare!).

My doctor says that it is fine and my girlfriends that have had babies all say it is fine.

Does anyone else still partake in chocolate, coffee and tea? In moderate amounts?

Re: Caffeine guilt~

  • yes. and i'd venture to say a good portion of us do. relax.

  • Chocolate, yes. But only decaf tea and decaf espresso drinks from Starbucks.

  • I have a medium iced coffee from Dunkin Donuts every morning and my Dr. said its just fine. I don't feel as bad about the coffee as I do about the strawberry frosted donut with sprinkles :)
  • I still have one cup of coffee a day as well.  I do feel guilty about it sometimes but my OB is ok with it, so I figure it is ok.
  • I try to limit myself to one of the above once a day.  Chocolate milk has been my best friend lately!  =)  I wasn't a big coffee drinker before but I have switched to decaf.  Iced tea is my weakness, especially sweet (my family is southern) so that's been the hardest thing.  You can make some pretty good decaf tea with the cold brew tea bags if you're interested!
  • 200 to 300 mg of caffeine is typically fine by your doc.  I have reg iced tea occasionally.  I only gave up coffee because I am watching my added sugar and I love flavored and sweet coffee.
  • chocolate...oh YES.

coffee and tea, no, but only  because I dont like the taste.  but I do drink soda (an 8oz can, about every other day).

Giving up caffiene 100% is an individual decision...there is no right or wrong.  Obviously gulping down energy drinks would be bad but that is not what you're doing.

  • Yep, You'll find that a lot of us do.  I eat chocolate all the time and usually have either tea or soda every day (sometimes both).  I stay away from coffee for the most part, but only because I'm allergic to the coffee bean and it makes me feel sick - even that though, sometimes I deal with the sick (probably about once a month) because I love the taste.
  • Don't stress.  I have one cup of tea or coffee a day, my OB said that was perfectly fine for me and choclate is a staple to my life.  :)
  • The guilt is probably going to cause more issues (i.e. stress) than the actual caffeine. Relax. If it makes you feel any better, I still drink a glass of wine here and there.

Yes, I eat chocolate, and drink at least one coke, sometimes two on most days.  I don't think there is anything for you to feel guilty about.

  • I felt guilty the first time I had a regular cup of coffee, but I never gave up chocolate?but I did cut back and didn't have ANY coffee during my 1st Tri. Though I did have an occasional Dr. Pepper.

I now have a small cup of coffee every morning, or every other morning. I'm no longer feeling guilty and one is my limit.

  • Yes - all of the above in moderate amounts.  Cup of coffee in the morning, maybe a coke or iced tea in the afternoon/at lunch or chocolate milk.
  • I have chosen to avoid it all (besides a small amount of chocolate every so often), but many don't and are just fine.

If it's enough to make you feel guilty (and you're likely stressing over it which isn't good for you or the baby), why don't you stop?

  • I'm not a coffee drinker, but I will have a diet coke here and there (haven't as much lately b/c it doesn't taste as good), and I love chocolate!
  • You're fine.  Our mothers were never told to give up caffeine at all.  It's not going to poison your baby.

The risks of caffeine are a higher rate of miscarriage and possible restricted blood flow to the fetus.  I would imagine (although I have no real knowledge) that the miscarriage risk is higher in the first trimester.  And I really don't think that even 2 or 3 cups of coffee a day would have any effect whatsoever.

If your doctor says it's fine (and most, if not all, do), then I wouldn't worry at all!

  • I feel you. I was a huge coffee drinker before, and I cut it out completely the first few months, but now I am having a weak cup most mornings and I feel guilty. I am SO good on everything else,?I eat NO junk food at all, no medications, organic everything..?But when I feel the caffeine kick in I feel like I am cracking out the baby! OB says it's OK, but I still feel a little bad.?
  • Yes.  I've started having a little cup of coffee in the morning (or a tea latte if I can hit up Starbucks or Scooters).  I like to tell myself it's more for my coworkers than for me :)

  • I usually get a medium coffee - 1/2 decaf, 1/2 regular (or sometimes 3/4 decaf) from DD or Wawa. My doc says it's fine.

I cut back a TON - I used to have 3-4 cups a day! Now I think I just need the taste for a pick me up more than anything.

  • I heart earl grey black tea... and have had quite a few migraines with my pregnancy... my nurse midwife actually suggests me taking tylenol with a cup of black tea for headaches.  STRESS IS MUCH WORSE THAN A TINY BIT OF CAFFEINE.
  • I'm sipping on my iced coffee right now :-)

Allergic to coffee? That's horrible! I'm not even a regular coffee drinker anymore (I stopped pre-pg just because I didn't want to be dependent on caffeine to wake me up in the mornings) but I couldn't imagine being allergic to it.

  • Thanks for the reassurance that I am not alone in my caffeine intake! I do usually only drink one caffeine beverage a day....

I too did cut out almost all of it in my first trimester, but now am back on the "caffeine in moderation" wagon! :)

  • I have about half of a cup of regular coffee every morning and a Coke 3-4 times a week. My Dr. told me that's perfectly fine.
  • I have a cup every morning, hot with half-and-half, and guilt free. :)
  • I definitely still have a cup in the morning, but have slowly been subbing in decaf.  Not because I feel guilty about it, but because when I'm breast feeding I don't want to *need* coffee.  Some babies can't handle the very small amount of caffeine, and I don't want to have to deal with cutting the habit all of a sudden.

As a side note, I just got back from Costa Rica, where they believe in coffee so strongly that they give infants bottles of coffee!  I'm not advocating this, but their babies all seem fine, so I think it's good to keep in mind that we in the US always tend to be very reactionary about health issues.

  • yup. i drink half reg. coffee w/ half decaf.  and i don't limit my chocolate inake at all but i'm not a huge choc. fan, but i do love m&m's, milkyways, reese's etc...

i must say i still feel guilty for drinking coffee but sometimes i need a pick me up.

  • I drink a cup of coffee every morning and sometimes I even get a latte in the afternoon.  I guess I'm a horrible mother since I probably go over the limit on those days.  GASP!  Wink  I drank coffee throughout my first pregnancy and my daughter is fine.

I do agree with one of the previous posters, though...if you are going to feel guilty about it, then you probably shouldn't do it.  There is no need to add stress to your life.
