Re-thinking my decision re: C's ear surgery

I'm really starting to rethink my decision to have the hole in C's eardrum repaired.  I know that, in the long run, this is best for him but everything I'm reading (incisions, recovery, possibility of the graft rupturing, etc) scares the crap out of me.

This is the link I just read.

And I'm scared.  Please tell me I"m making the right choice.  I've NEVER second guessed my decisions regarding my kids' health but I'm second guessing this one!

Re: Re-thinking my decision re: C's ear surgery

  • Well, you are second guessing this one most likely because it is serious. Any time a child has surgery it is scary.

I would think you werent normal if you didnt second guess your choice, but I think it is the right one and so do you. He is going to be ok.!!!

  • I guess too...its because ear tubes aren't very invasive and they don't use IV anesthesia...they use gas.

And I"ve never hesitated on tube surgeries or when C had his leg reset when he broke it.  Ugh.  I need a drink.

EDITED: to correct my poor grammar.

  • I remember asking yesterday but I don't think I saw your response as to how it happened.

I read the page and I know it seems scary, but it didn't sound to me like anything too horrible. I would talk to your ENT about your concerns and I'm sure there is a lot more about C's specific case more than you can find on the internet. You should know, stuff you read on the internet is always going to scare you. I know my opinion matters little b/c I'm not his mom, but it looks like you're making the right choice to have it done.

  • It's easy to second guess yourself as a mom.  We all do it about different things all the time.  Surgery can be scary and I am sure you are worried about his recovery, but I think you are making the right choice.  I hope he has an easy and quick recovery.
  • J-

He got the hole from a tube that popped out.  In almost all cases, the ear drum heals back normally.  His didn't.  The ENT and I waited several months to see if it healed and it never did.

FWIW: the opinions of others DO matter with this because I really have a hard time seeing the unbiased side of things.

  • I don't know all the specifics on your case, but DS just had his circ re-done. It didn't HAVE to be done, but it was good for him. It was a very hard choice to make, and the thought of him under gen. anesthesia scared me. I stayed off the internet though, too much info is not always a good thing. :)

  • My older son has had his tonsils, adnoids, and apendix removed. Also tubes twice. Each time except the apendix I had the same feeling my only source of comfort was to have second and sometimes third opinions to make sure I was doing the right thing. Good luck.
