eco-friendly drain cleaner?

How do you clean your drains? I don't like the chemicals available and my post-partum shedding has clogged up the bathroom sink.

I googled it and came up with a few ideas, but tried-and-true recommendations are always better. Thanks!

Re: eco-friendly drain cleaner?

  • i sprinkle baking soda down the drain, then follow with 1/2 cup of vinegar.  let it all fizz up for a few minutes, then run hot hot water down the drain.

    ^ Yep, that's what I do too.?

  • I use boiling hot water.  If its LOTS of hair (particularly hair mixed with soap) I break out the drain snake.  A little nasty, but very effective.

If you already have a clog in the pipe, do NOT pour baking soda down, it will just make it worse.  The most EF way to clean a clog is with a pipe snake.  These cost $5 at Lowes, and do the trick!  To maintain a clean drain/pipe, you can do the baking soda/vinegar trick, but it's not super good at actually clearing blockages.  There are a few commercial EF drain cleaners that use enzymes and citrus oils but I have found they work only so-so at best.
