As some may know, I am doing private, domestic adoption (just added that to my siggy today) and I am doing my own profile book, networking letter, flyers and business cards. I am also trying to set up ParentProfiles and a website. I am EXAUSTED! My profile books took a long time to design and produce and I ran into some major obstacles with getting resolution corrected for the pages to print correctly....I had to learn about PDF, jpeg, .tif and hi res jpegs. I learned about folders and files on my computer and how to use a jump drive. I am blessed to have a brother who is a video/photog pro and was able to help me out a lot.
I have other family helping produce my flyers and cards. She told me today she needed the font files I used. Again, I needed to figure out what they were and how to get them to her. I still don't know if I did it the right way, as she never answered my e-mail.
Between waiting for my attorney, and my husbands cousin to get back to me, I tried to work on my ParentProfile site...guess what, more file conversions required for pics. This time, my awesome digital camera apparantly takes pics that are too large and I now need a program to make them smaller! My profile pics ( which were done on PowerPoint ) were to small and my poor brother had to do hi res. jpg conversions on about 30 slides for me. PS : I do health care for a living and have no formal PC training.
Boy, what a way to get an education....I hope someday I can laugh about this!
I was so super stressed today, I puked....my DH told me to POAS....wouldn't that be a kicker!!!? I don't have any cheapie tests around, but if I puke again, I will have to cave...
If anyone can recommend some books with some of this info ...please let me know. I know Photoshop can do this , but right now, I can't shell out $600+ for a copy!
Re: I didn't know I had to be a techno genius to adopt a child (VENT)
I hear you on this. Our profile books are at the printer right now and we designed them ourselves. The printer started talking to me about different colors rgb versus ctk or something strange like that. Luckily, my marketing person at work was a savior and went through and showed me how to print everything at a press release level in PDF so that my pics printed appropriately. We had a test book printed and saw a pic or two that still weren't hi res enough. First time around we did Kinkos and whoa what a difference going to a professional printer makes!?
I used publisher, but we also have Photoshop Elements. I use it for my work instead of photoshop and it has everything I would use from Photoshop. It's only $70 or so. You might want to try that. ?
Good luck! DH and I said that maybe after all this work everyone will be getting profile books for xmas! ?
Thanks for your reply! I was wondering about Elements....do it do file conversions? That is what I really need. My attorney was so impressed with my profile book ( not really AWing here....well, just a bit
she wants me to do PowerPoint presentations for her office and profile for other potential adoptive parents. I am very interested in this career change, but feel I need some more help and edu. to go "pro". I will defi. check out Elements!!!
Thank you! And good luck to you!!!!
Yes, do check out Elements.
I use CS4 (which includes photoshop) professionally and I have to say, I don't think you want to spend the money on CS4/Photoshop anyway if you don't even have a working knowledge of it. Elements can do what you want, it is cheaper and it is more user friendly. You probably wouldn't need to use nearly all of the functions that the full version of Photoshop has and thus, it would be a waste of money. You may consider taking a photoshop class and persuing it in the future but for what you're doing now, I honestly don't think you need it. : )
Thanks, Mrs. Blake! i just downloaded a trial version ( for now) of Photoshop Elements and I will see if it has what I need! My brother recommended joining NAAP for photo pros but I really don't want to shell out $100 on a membership right now!
I will see if PSE has what I need and move on from there!!!
