Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Ectopic pregnancy.

I am 6 weeks pregnant and am having pain in my lower abdomen on the left side. Today I talked to my doctor and they are concerned that I am having an ectopic pregnancy. I later spoke with my mother who told me that there are members of my family that have had ectopic pregancies that have ruptured. Has anyone had one of these? If I am having one, at what point will it rupture? I am so terrified that that is what is happening to me. Can anyone give me any insight? Thank you.

Re: Ectopic pregnancy.

  • I haven't had one... but do you have a Doctor's appointment?  I understand that rupturing is avoidable if you catch it early.....

  • Yes, I do have an appointment but it's not until April 22nd.  I am supposed to call within the next few days if it continues.  In the mean time my mind is racing.....
  • Try to relax... and if you start having severe pain go to the er... they can confirm sac location, etc., with an ultrasound.

I know this may sound ironic coming from a girl who had a miscarriage... but I had pain in one side early on... six weekish and had it checked and everything was fine... just my uterus growing.  Nothing related to the ultimate loss of the baby.  It might very well just be that.  But if the pain gets really bad or sharp, I'd call your doctor back and insist to be seen earlier or go to ER....

  • The main symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy are one-sided pain, bleeding and lowered HCG levels. Generally, pain from an ectopic is really sharp and is very constant (doesn't come and go). Often, if there's not bleeding, doctors don't consider ectopics but the only way to be sure is to monitor beta HCG levels and do an ultrasound. If you start spotting, I'd call the doctor to get in?immediately?and if you're really worried then also consult your doctor.?

I know that I was in terrible pain and had heavy bleeding but that's not always the case. HTH! ?

oh please. not KU. effed up.
  • I had a tubal pregnancy just 2 weeks ago and was around 6 weeks.  I suspected something might be wrong for 6 days before finally going in for my "scheduled" appt - after the routine bloodwork I insisted they check it out with an u/s.  End result, my right tube was already rupturing and I ended up losing it later that afternoon in emergency surgery.  Oh how I wish that I had gone directly to the ER the first time I felt the 'weird" pain on my right side.  My pain was mild and came and went for 6 days, and I only spotted - never heavy bleeding.  I'm not trying to scare you, but I would definitely recommend calling your doctor!  If all is well (and I do hope that it is!) you can at least have the peace of mind knowing you were proactive.  Good luck!  Let me know if you have any other questions.
  • I pray that you don't have an ectopic because the pains can become unbearable. Every woman is different but a full blown out tube is not a good experience. Trust me you will recognize the pain. I would honestly "not" wait till April 22nd. Make sure they take you in for a sonogram to out rule it. Definitely go to the ER if they won't see you in the doctors office. At least you can have peace of mind. Remember if they catch it before the tube ruptures, they can do a D&C or give you methotrexate so your body can take its course. This is very important because it can save your tube, avoid a major surgery and you won't have to face the ugly fear of internal bleeding. I will keep you in my prayers and chances are that its just your uterus stretching. Oh and even though I bled with the 1st ectopic, the 2nd one I never bled so it all depends with your situation. Good luck
  • Typically unless your HCG is over 2000 they can't see anything with an ultrasound. If you're around 6 weeks they should be able to. I would wait a day or so to see what happens with the pain but don't go through the weekend if you're still hurting. I will tell you that you would know right away if it was rupturing - the pain is so bad you can hardly breathe.
  • Thanks everyone!  I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.  If I am still having pain on Thursday I am going to call the doctor again.  In the mean time I'll just pray everything is fine and its just my uterus expanding.  Thanks again!
