I've been meaning to ask for a couple days and the post below reminded me. My dog got into the garbage and while DH was cleaning it up I brought up the idea of composting again and he seemed interested and was asking how it works (last time he laughed and said 'no thanks.' so this is a big improvement!) But honestly, I know next to nothing about it.
Are there any good resources for this? How to start the pile, what is/isn't compostable, etc.?
Re: Talk to me about composting...

This site is pretty helpful.

You need to make sure you have half brown material(dead plant material like leaves, paper, etc) and half green material (fresh/wet material like fruits, veg, tea bag, etc) We used to compost in the ground and it worked fine but now we have an enclosed tumbler and find it easier. It also produces usable compost faster. Really it's not too hard and it makes for fantastic fertilizer if you garden. HTH
