Babies: 0 - 3 Months

ughh grant has been fighting me when i try to feed him.

it had stopped for the past 24 hours, but  now it's back , this time on BOTH breasts, not just the left.  he throws his head, SCREAMS and hits/scratches me frantically.   It makes me SO frustrated and helpless feeling. what the F is the deal????    tonight was the first night i was truly waiting at the door to hand him off to husb.  arghhhh

  • DD does this when she is over-tired.. She will grab onto my shirt and thrash about.. i just take her off and shussshhh her until she calms down then try again! ... oh ya it is very frustrating!
  • Well, that sounds alot scarier for BFing than for FFing, but Jovie sometimes throws a fit when I try to feed her too.  So I don't.  I just spend some time calming her.  Sometimes she needs a little snooze or relaxing cuddle time before she's ready to eat.  I'll try again every 10-15 minutes or until she fusses like she's hungry again.  Don't know what else to do!

  • Growth spurt? ?DD pulls off and gets really frustrated when she can't get enough...
  • This happens to me too.. and it REALLY frustrates me.. becuase it starts to hurt my nips when she's having to re-latch every two seconds..

It's hard to do this when you're so tired, but I assume it's because she's got two needs that are conflicting.. and you've got to figure out which one is inhibiting the hunger.

Sleep? - I rock her a little bit or walk around to calm her down.
    Dirtry Dipie? - duh.
Gas? - Burp and or bicycle legs
Colicy - put her in swing, sing to her and let her get her angry cry out and then soothe her after 2 or 3 mins.

Saves my nips and my sanity.

  • Are you exercising more now?  I read somewhere that sometimes lactic acid builds up in the BM after a workout and that it tastes bad.  Will he eat from a bottle or does he refuse that too?
  • Sounds like it could be a nursing strike. Other than just at feeding time, is acting funky in any way?

  • Has he recently had a cold? DS did this when he had an ear infection. He never had a fever with it.

Also, your letdown could be to forceful or maybe not fast enough? My LC told me to do super switch. She said when one side lets down so does the other side and it might not be fast enough for him, so I feed on one side he fusses and pulls off so I switch over to the other and just switch back and forth like that until he's done. Sometimes he just has a lot of gas and I need to walk around and pat his back until he lets a big burp or fart out.

  • DD did this for a couple days around that age. I came to the growth spurt conclusion and the way I got her to eat is i pumped some she took to the bottle and then put her right back on the breast. And i found if i stood up and bounced/rocked her around standing...she calmed down. idk if i got lucky but everytime i did it, it worked. I got desperate lol. She ended up just passing out after her fits so i had time to regroup. ah..GL! i hope it doesnt last long:(
  • DS does that when he's gassy or has a stuffy nose! Sometimes I used to have a forceful let-down- I could hear him choking on it!

Do you have J&J bedtime lotion? Maybe try putting it on the breast so he smells it while eating- (not where he'll ingest it obviously) I do that at bedtime and he eats so calmly now!!

  • I'd say growth spurt (it's about time for the 3 month spurt) or gas/reflux.  My LO has done that a couple of times to me.  I thought she was starving, but when I calmed her down and played with her she was totally content.
