XP: Layoffs affecting pregnant women

Interesting article in the NYT today.  It seems like this is happening to more and more of us and I tend to notice a trend of posters suggesting that contacting a lawyer should be the next step after a layoff.  This points out the difficulties in proving discrimination based on pregnancy.  Anyway, just interesting.

  • very interesting, unfortunately, it is so hard to prove you were let go now because you are pregnant and not because of the economy...
  • There were just a ton of layoffs at my company last week and luckily I was not laid off. ?Everyone kept saying you are safe they would never fire a pregnant woman to much liability. ?I guess not!! Glad you did not post this last week : )

  • My company would have no qualms about laying off a pregnant woman in today's economy.  If you got sued, all you'd need to do for your defense was remind everyone the lay off occurred during the worst finanical times seen in years.

  • My neighbor is due in 2 weeks and just lost her job.  She is still working up to her due date and they are giving her maternity leave plus 3 months salary.  DH and I were discussing if she got a lawyer if she'd even have a good case with the economy being as bad as it is (not that she was considering a lawsuit it was just a conversation we were having).  I'll have to show him this article.

  • Thanks for posting.  I was laid off at 36w, the day after I was eligible for disability.  Unfortunately, I was trying to get some extra work done and didn't file :(

I don't think I'd have a case, since I was 1 of 400 worldwide, but the timing does seem rather convenient for them.  Grrr...
