Would it be rude?

My Dad's birthday is on Friday and my MIL is retiring on Friday.  I want to have a BBQ on Saturday for these two events.  I always end up hosting holidays and events mostly because I have the space and so that we can have my family and DH's family there.  I really don't mind, I love having everyone over.  But it gets expensive buying all the food and stuff.  Would it be rude to ask everyone to bring a food dish or item over?  Except for my Dad and MIL of course....I wouldn't ask them to bring anything.  It's just family but with both sides it gets to be a lot of people.

  • If you are always the one to have everyone over and always cover the food, I don't see the harm in asking everyone to bring something to contribute.

  • Not rude at all - that's what's expected in our families anyhow.

It's not rude especially if you're the one almost always hosting.
  • Since it's all family I don't think that's rude at all. That's how we do all our family GTGs. The host does the meat/main dish (hamb, hotdogs, brats) and everyone else brings their fav said.
  • No, it isn't rude to ask that.  It's normal in my family to bring a dish for family get-togethers.  In fact, it's considered rude to show up empty handed.
