Bleeding in a singleton pg at 26 weeks?

Okay, I need some perspective here ladies.  My sister is 26weeks pg with her second child.  Last night she had a really sharp pain/cramp, and didn't think much of it. She had many more this morning and went to the bathroom and there was red blood.  She called her OB and they told her to just drink water and relax.

I am freaking out and thinking she needs to go to L&D now.  I don't want to be an alarmist because I know that I had a high risk pg and I was in L&D at least 10 times before the boys came with bedrest and everything, so I guess I am not really sure what is normal.

Is that the typical advice, just relax and drink water, shouldn't she go in?  I told her I think she should go but she keeps saying her dr. told her not to.  Sorry, I am probably being a freak about this, but I am scared for her.

Re: Bleeding in a singleton pg at 26 weeks?

  • How much blood?

I had to go in at 29 weeks because I had a placental abruption and was gushing blood.  BUT I did spot and have bright red blood all through my pregnancy.  I only had to go to L&D when it was gushing and had clots and stuff.

This pregnancy, I am having lots of spotting and sometimes it is a pretty big smear of red blood, but I don't worry unless it progresses, gets heavier, etc.

Having said all of that, everyone is different and if she hasn't been bleeding up until this point, I would definitely go to L&D, have a non stress test and try for an ultrasound to see where the blood is coming from.

  • IMO if her Dr. won't see her then she needs to go to the hospital just to check things out. When I was 12 weeks I had a hemorrhage and my OB was the same way. DH and I went to the ER and luckily everything was okay but it scared me to death! She should just go and get checked out. Good luck and keep us posted :)
It took over four years to be diagnosed with PCOS. We TTC #1 for 18 months, did 5 rounds of Clomid and finally moved onto IVF...which worked! Throughout our IF journey, we suffered 3 miscarriages. We conceived both DD and DS without treatment.

  • Thank you, she said no clots, but she has bled heavily every time she has had sex (has not had it lately though).  This is the first time the bleeding has been for no reason.

I am already on the anxious side to begin with and then my pg was so different than hers, I had to go in for everything so I never know when I am being overly cautious or just a bit crazy.  Embarrassed

  • I would think she should go in to check it out.  I had bleeding around 32 weeks.  It was more than spotting but not gushing, and my OB had me go into L&D right away just to be safe.
  • I bled throughout my pregnancy, but I had a cervical polyp and they should have been able to see that during an exam.

  • I would absolutely go in.  Bleeding plus cramping means a trip to the L&D.  I hope everything turns out to be alright.

  • I would definately go in.  Better to be safe than sorry.

  • Thank you all so much for your responses.  The bleeding has stopped so she didn't go in (also because her dr. told her not to).  I am worried, but she is going to sit tight because that is what her dr. said.  I told her to promise me to go in for the slightest twinge though.

    UGH, thanks again ladies!!
