Let me preface by saying I have zero patience. At all. We were supposed to find out the babies sex at our last u/s, last Wednesday. The baby had other plans and had legs firmly crossed. We do have another u/s on April 29th to check the location of the placenta, as it's currently low lying.
I absolutely do not want to wait any longer, I'm ready to pay the $80 for a gender scan at a keepsake u/s place. I'm being dumb and emotional about it.. I got ridiculously upset this weekend when MIL said, "well guess we can't do any shopping yet since you couldn't get the baby to cooperate!" And I'm so tired of people telling me what THEY would have done if it were them. I drank a cold drink with sugar and caffeine, I ate before the appointment, I got up to pee and jumped up and down.. nothing I could have done would have made a difference. It wasn't my fault!
Anyway, I called the local keepsake place and they said if I'm only wanting to find out gender, the scan will be free if they can't find out. They said I can walk around as much as I want, they have tons of tricks to get the baby to move, they don't care if it takes all day. I reaalllly want to go, even though I know I should wait until the 29th. Talk some sense in to me...
Re: I need paitence re: ultrasound
I'm no help.....I say go!!
If we don't find out on Thursday I'm setting up an appointment for next week. I can't NOT know. So I say go do it!!
I understand how you feel.....i have been waiting patiently since day 1!!!!! my doctor is more willing to wait until AFTER 20 weeks to do the big u/s and when he said that i almost fainted (he said prior to that he could most likely tell at 16-17 weeks but was going to wait!)
It's killing me. i would totally pay the $80 as long as it was a guarantee that you would find out. most places will let you come back for free if you dont get it on try #1
"In February 2004, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the following statement:Persons who promote, sell or lease ultrasound equipment for making ?keepsake? fetal videos should know that FDA views this as an unapproved use of a medical device. In addition, those who subject individuals to ultrasound exposure using a diagnostic ultrasound device (a prescription device) without a physician?s order may be in violation of state or local laws or regulations regarding use of a prescription medical device. I understand your impatience, but I don't think it is a good idea. There will still be PLENTY of time to shop.

Mom, why are you washing my feed in the sink?!
I didn't have patience, I was a wreck over it... I needed to know...go, pay the $80, it was DEF worth it to me....
Good Luck.
I'm joining to "I'm no help" group, I'd go and pay to 80$
I'm not sure what I would do if I were you. I tend to feel like things happen as they are meant to be. So going into my big u/s, I figured if we didn't find out, it would be a sign to me that we weren't meant to know. But, we got the money shot so I'm no help. I would be very tempted to do the keepsake u/s but I would probably just hope that I'd get another u/s along the way by my doctor and that we'd be able to find out then.
It's tough not knowing when you want to. I love how people are blaming you! I had my trick for the morning. I had a few SweetTarts and a Sierra Mist beforehand. And the baby was jumping around like crazy. But, it could be random. My cousin guzzled Mountain Dew and swears by it. I don't think there's any guarantee to make baby move.
GL with whatever you decide.
This.
Cindy, go ask the good 'ol MM ladies. They'll tell you this: Go take that $80 and save it until when you get your next u/s. Then go spend it on cute outfits and other baby related items. That will be way more fun.
You can do it!
We had our end of month appt Friday and DH was so excited to ask about when we can find out baby's sex. Doc said 3 weeks. PPPFFF, we called an u/s place near our house and got right in Sunday morning..BUT, the little booger had the legs crossed and the cord in the way. The tech had me walk around, so I did some easy jumping and poking. The baby moved, was doing the splits but still had the cord in the way..DH was yelling at the screen "grab that cord and move it". We paid $25 and an extra $5 for it to be on DVD...well worth it, but I think we're gonna wait til our dr ordered one. Altho, I might sneak another one this week sometime.

Maybe this is your baby's way of showing you who is really in charge!
Personally I think you have the whole rest of your life to know whether you were pregnant with a girl or boy but if you're dying to know, spend the $80 already so you won't have one more thing to think about. I would also invest $5 in some duct tape to seal your MIL's mouth shut.
I knoooow. And realistically, it doesn't even work to do another scan. DH already asked off work for the scan on the 29th of April, he is off this Wednesday but I work.. and next week he works all week. So if it's getting pushed back 3 weeks I might as well wait a few more.
I know I SHOULD wait. I just really, really don't want to. I'm going to smack the next person that says, "Oh, but did you do XYZ to get the baby to move?? Ours was jumping all over!" I just have a lazy baby, lol

FWIW, we were thinking about a 3D ultrasound, just as a keepsake, until I did a little research and read about the un/underqualified (non-medical) staff and higher doses of radiation from those things. Not worth it to us to have the extra radiation and potentially mis-read images.
I second that girl.....I'd say go for it!!!!!
"Ultrasound is a form of energy?sound waves vibrating at approximately a hundred times the frequency of normal sound?and the waves can affect tissue in a variety of ways. Heat is one effect. In addition, although ultrasound itself does not produce audible noise, secondary vibrations can produce noises as loud as 100 decibels, causing fetuses to move.?(10)?Other effects, still poorly understood, include tiny bubbles in tissue (a process known as cavitation), sheering forces within tissues, induced flows within fluids, and creation of minute quantities of toxic chemicals.?(11)....
As for keepsake fetal portraits, Dr. Copel advises his patients to steer clear: ?We don?t know what equipment they?re using, what the acoustic output is, and what the training of the personnel is.?...Because tissue heat increases over the length of exposure, well-trained sonographers limit the duration of any medical ultrasound procedure. But in multiple investigations of keepsake fetal portrait studios, FDA investigators found patients being exposed to higher machine settings for as long as an hour in order to obtain fetal pictures, much longer than is considered prudent.?(24)"?
A little more from the aforementioned link. Seems to be mostly falling on deaf ears, but the info is out there.. Long levels of radiation by a possibly unskilled, non medically trained person heating up my babies tissue just to find out the sex a few weeks sooner VS waiting a few extra weeks.. Hmmm.
Does it make a difference if the staff is medically trained? The clinic I looked at is run by a radiologist, and she is the only one to do the u/s. She actually worked for my OB's office for 15 years, then decided to open her own business. My OB's office even has her flyer sitting out in the lobby.
