Is Molly too much like a nn name?

All of the nn name/resume discussions have led me to post this.  I've actually been worried about this for a long time.  Does Molly sound too much like a nn?  I know it's traditionally a nn for Mary.  Will it be a name that sounds grownup and looks good on a resume in the future?  I go back and forth, sometimes I think it sounds too much like a little girl, and then other times I think that if I saw a doctor or lawyer with the name Molly I wouldn't think twice about it, it wouldn't make me not want to use that person's professional services or not hire that person.  WDYT?

  • Not at all, it stands on it's own. I didn't even realize it could be a nickname for Mary.

  • I think the days when Molly was a recognizable nickname for Mary in America are long gone (the UK may be a different story...).

Molly is a great name! It's bound to make a comeback soon. Start that train!

  • I never knew that Molly was a traditional nickname for Mary until college.  But, I had a good friend in college named Molly and she absolutely hated her name because she thought that everyone thought of it as a nickname.  She felt like it was a little girl name.  Not sure I necessarily agree with her, but it is at least possible that your daughter will feel that way if you name her Molly.

  • I think it's a proper name in its own right. To me, it's no different than Kelly, Holly, even Amy or Jamie. I know several people with all of these names, including Molly (or in her case, Mollie), and I've never heard any of them say it doesn't feel like a "complete" name. GL with whatever you decide!
  • My sister's name is Mollie. ?Never new it was a nn before!

    ditto.

  • I went to school with a Molly and that was her legal name.  I didn't even know it was a nn for Mary.

  • I love it.  It's on my list!
  • I love it. I think it is a stand alone name. As far as the whole resume thing, I would not want to work for a company that judged me solely on my name. I am a HR Recruiter and I would never judge someone because their name sounded like a nn.
  • I'm Holly, so I'm partial to the H instead of the M =)

Anyway, I think it's perfectly fine!  I've never heard Molly used as a nickname for any other name.

I love the name Molly. It's a great child's name, but also a great adults name. I worked for a Molly who was in her 60s and I never thought it was strange. It was on my list, but DH vetoed it because he said it sounds like a dog's name. Don't take it off yout list!!

If we have a girl we are naming her Juliet so that and Molly are the ones I like on your list. ?

DD's name is Molly...so I love it, obviously.  I think we've only had a comment from one person that asked if Molly was a nn or her given name.  Everyone seems to love it and it suits my DD perfectly.

    GL!

Molly is a recognizable nn and a recognizable proper name.  It is, however, very much a "little girl name" and not an adult/professional name IMO.

Ditto this.  I know a Mollie from HS (now in her early 30's) and I don't think the name fits her as well as it did as a teenager.

  • My name is Molly and I've never had any professional trouble because of it- in fact I've been pretty successful in job searches/interviews. I think it has to do with the fact that it's not a strange name but it's not too common, either.

I always loved the spelling Mollie, though.

If it helps: the most common responses I hear when I tell people my name are 1) I like that name and 2) I/someone I know has/have/had a dog named Molly. (LOL I'm serious- it's a super popular dog name, but I don't mind).

  • It sounds nicknamey to me, but I don't think most people will assume it's short for anything.
  • One of my students name is Molly. I never thought of it as a NN
  • I think it is a fine name! I don't think of it as a nn at all (I know a bunch of Molly's, age ranges from 10-45).
  • I like it!

  • I don't like it.  I've had a few friends with dogs named Molly.  Same thing goes for Max.
  • I love the name Molly. It sounds so warm and friendly.  I never knew it was a nn.

  • The only Molly I've ever known was actually named Mary but IMO unless a nn shortens the formal name I don't see the point in it. Like Christie being a nn for Christine. I just don't "get" it.
