2nd Trimester

Is your DH taking a "leave" when the bebe is born?

I just got to thinking about it today sine my mom asked.  DH said he plans on taking a week off.  I don't know why but that seems short to me.  Maybe that's just because I'm taking 10 weeks, lol.  I then asked him how long he would take if I ended up needing a c-section and he said "maybe 2".  Wha?!  Luckily, my mom will be here to help the week I'm due (assuming I'm on time), then it will just be me by myself with the newborn (if DH only takes the one week off, I'm on my own after my mom leaves & he goes back to work) and DH's parents will come down at some point but I don't know when or for how long (hopefully just a weekend).

  • he gets 2 weeks from fmla, but i think he's gonna take an extra one or two, also.

  • He is taking a week off.  I told him he does not even need to take that off.  He is allowed up to 12, but 6 would be unpaid.

  • My DH banked vacation and leave and will take 3 weeks to a month off.  He is pretty lucky to be able to take extended vacation time.
  • DH gets three months...yes perfect timing, he's a teacher and I'm having her about a week after they get done with finals!
  • Yes, his work is awsome and told him he can take all the time he needs. I'm sure 7-10 days will be enough. He can always come home or take a day off if I feel like I need him.

If anything I will need him to deal with his mom who is insitant on comming up to "help" for an extended period of time.

  • DH is taking one week paid.  I think FMLA allows more than that, especially in a c section scenario.  But DH hates being at home, he'd want us to run all over town doing stuff....not happening with a newborn.  I hope I deliver like on a Friday so then he also will get two weekends in there.  haha.
  • 1 or 2 and that's fine with me.  I will be ready to get into a routine by the time he goes back.

  • That seems to be about the normal. DH is deployed right now but if he was home the military gives 10 days paternity leave.
  • Nope. I'm guessing he'll take about a week off too depending on his case load. He's already blocked off the first few weeks of September so that he shouldn't have a trial scheduled but he may have one coming up. I had a nightmare that he was in court when I went in to labor so I made him block it off. LOL

I'm a little freaked about being by myself but I figure after a week I should be good. I can call MIL, SIL or SAHM friends if I need something after he goes back to work.

  • My DH will most likely only be able to take 2 or 3 days off if we are lucky! He is off work right now because he is hurt, so I dont think they will want him to be gone any longer. But my mom and MIL will be over as much as I would like them, as well as my SIL because she just lives next door!

  • My DH is thinking about taking 3 MONTHS off!!!! I am not real crazy about this. It will cut into my allowable time off, and... to be honest, what the heck are we going to do for 3 months??! I understand some of his reasoning - he will basically delay starting his 2nd year of residency by 3 months, and his residency year will be very busy and keep him away from home a lot, so he wants as much time as possible to bond. But that pushes back the end of his residency by 3 months, too (ie when he starts making REAL money), and I think I'd probably go insane with him here for that long....

  • I think he's taking at least two weeks.

  • when DS was born (tuesday), we came home form the hospital on thursday and DH went back to work that following monday.  i was fine bc my mom took that week to come help me every afternoon, bu i don't think i would have faired well on my own that first week or so home....

this time around i told DH if he tries that crap again i'll eat his face off. when i get home from the hospital, not only will i have the stress of a newborn, but also of chasing down a 15 month old, so i'm going to need all the help i can get.  i told DH he is taking at least a week from the time we get home from the hospital.  then my mom will come for a week.  then his mom if i still need help.  3 weeks to get back on track.  that's what i'm aiming for.

  • Be thankful your DHs can take a "leave"!!

My DH is a contractor for the government, so they get NO FMLA or the option to even think about taking quite a few vacation days. ?That, and if he leaves for 2 days in a row, the place falls apart without him. ?Argh. ?But he has told his panicky boss that no matter what, when I go to the hospital, he is out that door - and gone for at least 3 days. ?Our moms live here in town, so if I really need help, etc. - or just because - I'll be OK.?

  • My DH can only take a week. that is all the vacation he will have then. and then in november he gets two more but that doesn't help us in september. so he'll take his week of vacation and any sick days he has.
  • My DH can save sick time indefinitely, so he has 38 days right now.

He's planing on taking two weeks so that he can save his sick for anything else he needs. If our kid gets sick, there will be some times where it is easier for him to leave work than me. If I need the help, though, he can take more.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • my DH works with his mom and they own a business- if he takes off, then they pretty much have to close down...he may try to get a lot done before hand and take a week off, but I highly doubt it will be more.

My mom lives next door to me, so she will be able to help as much as I need her.

He is probably going to take 2 weeks and then try to work another week or so from home. Knowing his work-a-holic butt, he'll probably work from home the whole time. Stick out tongue

  • he's in law school, and school resumes about 2 weeks after i'm due. he has interviews 5 days after i'm due, so we're hoping i'm not too late!!

so, to answer your question, he doesn't really get any time off. :(

  • We work for the same company and even thoughh our employer will give him as much time as he wants, he probably won't be able to take more than a week off. He has a really important job and the more time he takes off, the more stress he will be under to catch up.
  • Have him look into the disability and FMLA his job offers. Many times the father can take time off under the "helping a sick family member" which is you, since you are the one who is disabled, instead of "the baby". DH was going to use his vacation and some unpaid leave but then we found out he could use 2 weeks of sick under the "care of a family member" clause.

  • The plan is for him to take a week off and then work from home an additional week.?

  • My fiance will be taking a week off. That's what he gets as far as his PTO goes. It's fine because at least we will get a week together as a family and we need the money as well.
  • No, he doesnt get any time off, and he is the boss, so he cant be away that long anyway.  I'm going to be a SAHM, but its going to be very scary the first couple weeks.

  • All of my mat leave is unpaid (7 weeks) and he's saving his vacation for our honeymoon (5 days in September), so the time he takes off for the delivery will be unpaid and we want to limit that to 1-3 days if possible. So, he'll be with me while I'm in the hospital (provided everything goes smoothly and I don't need an extended stay) and then it's back to work, and this honestly doesn't bother me one bit.

  • dh gets 2 weeks paid paternity leave that will start the minute I go into labor.?

  • He is taking one week for sure. For the second week he is going to work form home/do half days. This is the plan for now unless I have a C sect.

  • DH saved two weeks vacation so he'll have that.  I'm taking 3 months and trying to save as much vacation as possible to get as much of it paid as possible.
  • DH doesn't have official "vacation time."  He needs to bill hours, so as long as he meets the requirement he can take as much time as he wants (within reason).  He plans on taking a week at some point, depending on when my mom comes to help.  She'll be here a week, and it's silly for them to overlap.  He can work from home as well, which he may do in the beginning if he's super tired!

  • The plan right now is for him to take 2 weeks.
  • When DD was born he took the 2 days I was in the hospital and then 3 more. then 2 1/2 days.  He was eager to get back b/c his jackass of a father came and planted himself here for 3 weeks to escape his wife.    Ugh.  With the twins I am trying to gently encourage him to take 2 weeks off b/c I think it will be a hard adjustment for DD and I don't want any family coming and planting themselves again- esp't in the beginning.
