NSAIFR - Please help me with my stupid cat.

This cat is driving me insane and I don't know what to do. He is about 9 mo old and I have such a hard time with him. It wasn't like this with my other cat.

So whenever DH is NOT home, he decides to jump on the table. This is one thing I just cannot stand. I've tried scaring him with noise. Now I'm doing the water bottle thing, but he doesn't even seem to care. He can be soaking wet, jump down from the table, then jump right back up. And then we will do it again.

I've tried distracting him with a lazer beam, but then I realized I'm just rewarding him bc when he gets on the table the beam comes out, and he loves the beam. So back to the water bottle we went.

This happened a record breaking 15 times today so I just took him off and put him in his carrier case.

Please tell me you have some suggestions. I don't know what went wrong with Fritz. MewMew completely understands "Get down", and he will get down, and that's that.

  • That's kooky!  Our cats hate water, so the water trick works for nearly everything.  Good Luck!  Ballsy cat!

  • Have you tried putting tin foil on the table?  That's supposed to scare some cats.  Of course, mine curls up on it and laughs at me so my advice may be worthless.
  • how about switching to a squirt gun- shoot him right in the face, they usually hate that more. I've also heard that putting loud crashing things on the table can help, like tin pie pans, and empty cans, things that spook him when they fall.... I dunno. Reason #239853 why I don't have cats anymore ;-)

  • Have you tried approching him in a manacing manner?  ie; with a look that makes it clear you are pissed.

Otherwise I have no other advice my cats run for the hills when they see the spray bottle.

  • I've tried screaming in my voice, and in deeper voices and in monster voices. He just stares.

I'm going to try the tin foil next. I've never heard of that before!

I was going to suggest tin foil too. My cats HATE the sound of it. Of course, I'm a pushover and let my cats do whatever the hell they want so I'm probably not the best advice giver here!

  • the foil worked for us.

it's probably time to break it out again...

This is what I was going to suggest. Otherwise I can't really help. Our cats are all horribly behaved but we don't really do anything about it. Embarrassed I'm sure any of the ladies who attended the first night of the TTTC GTG in November will remember our kitten jumping up to the counter and trying to get at the food every 5 minutes!

  • I have one like that.  She is long haired so we would spray her until she was soaked and I don't think she really ever felt it.  My short hair just had to see the squirt gun and she'd be gone.  I was really frustrated in the beginning as I have actually never had a cat that would jump on the table or counters but we catch ours up there pretty regularly.  They've gotten better but we still catch them up there from time to time and Ethel (the long hair) will just look at us when we yell at her, it's almost a little funny now (but it's embarassing when you have people over who don't get cats).  They won't do it while we're in the room but we catch Ethel napping on the dining room table sometimes or we can hear them jump down from the counter when we are in the other room.

Sorry, I would second foil, but I never tried it, I didn't want foil all over my table/counters all the time, but maybe it will work.

    Good luck!

  • The table is foiled. I scrunched it up a bit for noise and texture. I will report back in a few days if it actually worked. Maybe the pet store makes something specially for this, I will also have to ask them.

Yes, my cat is long haired too. Maybe that's why? But I try to squirt in the face and butt, it still doesn't work. But I suppose that he doesn't really FEEL wet because of his hair.

Funny thing, when I lived with my parents, MewMew (whos 10) would lay on the couch. Well my mom would NOT allow this. So I would sit on the couch with MewMew. And when he heard my mom's foodsteps he would jump down. But the funny thing is, he never jumped down when he heard anyone else's footsteps! Just my mom's! Haha!

  • a pet sitter I had recommended making the floor more interesting than the table - getting out treats to entice the cat to jump down, etc. it sort of worked with our cat - in a way I thought it encouraged him to jump up so that he could get a treat if he jumped down. I have to admit that he gets up on the counter less often now though.

is there a way to totally blockade the table when you're not using it?

  • Inle - Hmm that is weird, I would think the same way.

Nope no way to blockade it. Living room, dining room, and kitchen all openly connected. But OH MAN, it would be sooo great to have a separate dining room with a door to close!

  • Have you tried puffing them with a compressed air canister (the things you use to get dust off your keyboard).  My cats do not mind water but HATE the compressed air.  All I have to do is show them the canister.  The other thing I found that worked especially when they were younger is hissing at them.  I know it seems strange but that is what momma cat does when they are going something she does not like.  They responded really well to that and know that hiss=bad.  Good luck.

  • if the foil doesn't work you can put double sided sticky tape on the table b/c they hate the way it feels on their paws

you can also try a citronella spray if the water bottle doesn't work but then you have to catch him in the act
