Infertility

JackieMac

I really appreciate your offer - this is all still very new and of course confusing.  DH's SA showed only 5% motility, but his count was fine.  Other than my thyroid, I have no known issues.  My ob/gyn referred us to a local fertility clinic.  We are going next week and have no idea what to expect.  I imagine IUI is our first option, but am not sure.

Any insight on what to expect, questions to ask, etc is appreciated.  Thanks again!

Re: JackieMac

  • I am so sorry that you have to deal with this - believe me I know how hard it is.  They are probably going to run a batter of test on you - to rule out anything else.  Like CD 3 bloodwork, HSG - those types of things - unless you have already had them.  I would ask to see a Urologist - our first RE said there was no need for my DH to see a Urologist and I listen to him - for over a year - then I switched RE's and the first thing he told DH to do was to go see a Urologist and it turns out he had a varicocle and needed surgery - since his surgery his number are slowly improving.  Is you Dh on Vitamins??  My DH takes a multi vitamin and extra Vitamin C.  Also we were told to cut out or limit Caffeine and Alcohol.  I think they will probably suggest IUI's to you first - I know alot of women on this board who have had success with IUI's - even with MFI.  Especially if you are only dealing with low morph.  I hope this helped some - if you have any other questions please let me know - I will be happy to help in anyway that I can.

P.S. my dh number were low across the board - his morph was anywhere from 3% to 6% - count was 5 million to 16 million and motility was 44% to 60% - hope that can shed some light.

  • I have had some b/w and am still waiting to hear back on CD 21 results.  I haven't had a HSG (heard those are uncomfortable).  When I called the fertility clinic my ob/gyn referred us to, I said I wanted to make an appointment for the urologist and she told me we need to see the 'main' doctor first to evaluate everything and then DH would see the urologist.  He is taking a multi-vitamin but nothing else.  He does drink a lot of caffine and could cut back on his alcohol.

We are dealing with low motility, not morph as you mentioned above.

How did they determine your DH had a varicocle?

  • Oh I am sorry I thought you said morph.

Yes, HSG are not the greatest but they are over pretty quickly.  Please keep me posted on what test they want to run on you - I have had all of the test done - endo biopsy, hsg, lap surgery - so I can tell you what to expect.

They did not even have to do an ultrasound - they could just tell by looking at him that he had a varicoele. They say it could take up to a year to see real improvement from the surgery - that is why we are waiting a full year from surgery - to start IVF.

  • You two have certainly been through a lot but it sounds like you are getting closer to what you want.

I will definitely keep you posted.  I'm sure I'll have 10 million questions after Tuesday's appointment.  Thanks again for your support.  Its not easy when you first find out there are challenges to conceiving so I really appreciate it.
