Y Chromosome Microdeletion

Was anyone's husband tested for and diagnosed with Y Chromosome Deletion.  My husband was tested for it and I am almost positive he is positive since the urologist called before we went on vacation last week and said he wanted DH to make an appointment to go over bloodwork.

If he does have this condition, then there is no treatment except IVF with ICSI.  What it also means it that if we were successful with IVF and had a son, with 100% certainty he would also be positive for it, meaning he would also have fertility problems in the future.

Tomorrow's appointment cannot come soon enough for us.

My DH is being teted for that and some other things, but we won't have the results back for another few weeks :-(

    GL at your appointment!

  • My husband's initial urologist appointment was in late February and the Y chromosome deletion test had to be sent to a special lab since it's not part of the standard bloodwork package.  My DH does have some sperm so even if he does test positive, the urologist seems to think we have a good chance for success with ICSI.

Good luck to your husband also.

i hope that isn't the case, but if it is, think of the plus side.  1) You at least know what your options are.  No more stressing month by month, or doing fertility treatments that are NOT helpful (like IUI).  2) You will be able to tell your son before he's ready to be a dad, so that he will be prepared as well.  i would have loved to have known with 100% certainty that my only option is IVF with ICSI before the last 2 years of stress and anxiety, you know?  As unpleasant as the thought is for you to think of your future son, at least he'll (and his wife will) be spared some of the emotional costs of IF.

I wish my husband could see things that way.  Unfortunately, he shuts down at the thought of ART and he is more likely to think that maybe we just shouldn't have children.  Hopefully, his position will change over time when he is more comfortable with his situation and realizes that we do have a very good option to achieve a pregnancy with our genetically-related child.
