2nd Trimester

Hip pain during the night

Over the past few weeks, I've been waking up with really bad hip/glute pain during the night.  I understand that my hips are moving - although I don't know why they're expanding so much!  I already have an hour glass figure (although not at the moment) and so IMO my hips really don't need to be expanding as much as I feel they are.

The pain is so bad though that it actually wakes me up at night.  I sleep with a pillow between my knees, but it doesn't seem to be doing much.  Anyone else experiencing this pain?

Re: Hip pain during the night

  • I am! I experienced this several weeks ago and it went away for awhile, but last week it came back with a vengence! I am sleeping with a maternity pillow but the pain still wakes me up too. My doc ok'd Tylenol PM occasionally for the pain. I haven't tried it yet but I might tonight!

  • I have this too!  I have been using Tylenol PM though which works well.
  • its also just because you are sleeping on your side a lot. I've found that if you keep you leg straight - so that your hip is "locked" the pain goes away. So when I lay on my side the bottom leg is totally straight and top leg lays over onto the bed. then if the pain switches to the top leg I roll over. Also, just laying on your back for a few minutes will relieve it. I haven't found the pillows to be too much help either honestly.
  • The snoogle drives me insane.  I wish I had just purchased a body pillow.  The pillow part for your head is too hard, and It's just too big all around.  I like reading with it, but I may just invest in a king sized pillow to help with the pain.  If I an avoid taking Tylenol PM that would be my preference, but if this continues, I might just have to cave.  Glad to hear I'm not alone though!  Smile

  • I was told to lay on my back and squeeze a tennis ball, pillow or something like that between my knees as hard and long as I can. Repeat a few times. This exercise will help shift your pelvic bone back into place. It really helped me!

Really?!  Ok thanks.  I may give that a try.

  • I have it on my left side...first I thought it was because I was sleeping too much on that side, then I developed sciatica in my left buttock. Ugh! I bought a snoogle and it seems to help me sleep better at night. I try a variety of positions throughout the night...tucking part of the snoogle under my bottom or my hips seems to help also.  I'm sitting on a herbal hot pad right now because I gotta loosen that sciatic nerve.

  • I have been having hip pain for weeks and I have to start physical therapy because my hip and pelvis are out of line pretty bad.  I will have more once I go to my appointment tonight.
  • I have had hip pain since almost the very beginning, but it was pain that I would get from running (at the beginning og pregnancy I had run a 1/2 marathon and had hip issues). Now that I am not running long distances anymore, my hip pain has intensified, surely due to pregnancy. It constantly wakes me at night and sometimes I have to get up and sleep on the couch so I can be in an almost sitting position to relieve the pressure from side sleeping. You are definitely not alone.
  • I've been suffering this as well.  I did see my chirpractor which helped set me back in place and he also told me about a stretch that helps the pain too.  If you sit up straight in a chair, put your right (or left) ankle on the opposite knee and gently push down on the knee that is resting on your other knee.  Make sure to sit up straight as if you have a book on your head.  It's been helping a lot for me lately.  I HATE sleeping on my side all the time,  but have no choice and I prefer not to take any type of meds during my pregnancy either.  HTH!!!
