When did your OB/Peri tell you

that you couldn't fly?

I have a vacation planned at 23 weeks, when I told the OB about it, he gave me the side eye.

Re: When did your OB/Peri tell you

  • I flew to London and back at 19-20 weeks and my peri had no problem with it.

He never gave me a cut off date because I never asked for one.

But when I asked about driving to Detroit for Christmas at 28 weeks, he asked me "You're not flying, right?"

People all have different levels of comfort about flying/travel.  I'm a little bit on the more relaxed side, I think.  I would probably fly at 23 weeks, as long as the flight wasn't a super long one and I was flying some place with good medical care.

  • I was to sick to do anything until 24w, but even after that, he wouldn't let me and H drive to NH (8hrs away).

  • I was not allowed to go out of the country at 24 weeks.  I wanted to go on vacation and my OB said as long as I was near a GOOD hospital it was ok.  He said he would rather me not fly though.  I was allowed to drive up to NH (from NJ) at 24 weeks.

His rationale was that if I was to go into labor that early at least a good hospital here in the states could help me - a hospital in an underdeveloped area might not be able to.

  • My OB did not want me to fly on a business trip that was at 20 weeks. He's on the conservative side when it comes to flying + twins.... doesn't believe in risking it unless it's really necessary - but of course- will let you do what you want (up until the point that you'd need a doc note at least)
  • I travel for work and my OB said I could fly up until 30 weeks but I stopped at 27-28 weeks. I was really tired on that trip and glad it was my last one.

It seems every OB is different on their recommendations and how you're doing during the pregnancy.

  • My OB and Peri were fine with flying until around 28-30 weeks; however, I took my last flight at 24 weeks and was pretty uncomfortable, so I chose not to go anywhere again after that...

  • Thanks, it sounds like I should just wait it out and then let the OB/peri decide for me in the next few months. You ladies rock!

  • We had a vacation planned for when i was 26 weeks and my Peri made me cancel it...good thing too...I ended up in PTL that very week and I would have been in a world of poop had we been in our favorite lil town in Mexico...in the middle of no where.

  • I was allowed to fly until 26 weeks. He was more conservative about things, but usually put it as 'you have to realize that you can have more issues with twins and should be prepared to spend a lot of time in a hospital at your destination if, and it's a big if, something should go wrong'. I figured I wanted these babies more than any vacation, so I cancelled my 30th bday trip to London (just as well - my m/s was unbearable) and didn't do any unnecessary traveling. I'm sad we didn't have a babymoon, but at nearly 35 weeks with no issues, I still don't regret my decision.
  • Mine is not so concerned about actual flying, but about being out of town/not within driving distance in case anything goes wrong. He has a whole thing about 18-24 weeks being a danger zone with multiples so he did not want me to travel far then...my shower at home is gong to be at about 25 weeks-ish and he is ok with me going as long as things are going ok, he is going to do a cervical exam & FFN test to reassure us that week.

I asked if flying (1 1/2 hr-ish flight) or driving (9 hr drive, I wouldn't actually be driving though) would be better & he said whatever I preferred, since flying is such a process now anyway, and as long as I get out every couple hours in the car to walk around.  I'm also going to take a copy of my medical records just in case.
