DS is really small and it's upsetting me

DS1 has always been really skinny, that's not new to me. The problem is that it seems he's getting even skinnier. I started pulling out the shorts to get ready for summer (which here, will happen in a couple of weeks). The 3Ts are way too big. Most of the 2Ts are too. In fact, the 18mo fit him perfect in the waist. I just took all of his 2T shorts from last year that had adjustable waists, and loosened them up two notches on each side. So basically, last year he wore 2Ts pulled in six notches, and this year he's wearing 2Ts pulled 4 notches. He's 3.5 years old. I can't stop thinking about it and it's making me feel really bad.

  • My DD is also very small and it is starting to worry us. She is two and a half. Her 18 month clothes fall off of her. She was sick 2 weeks ago and lost weight. We joke that people would think we didnt feed her. She can eat like a little piggy but she just dont gain. Dh is very skinny and his dad doesnt ever seem to gain weight either. She was 4lb 13 oz at birth. Was your DS small?

We will also be getting out last summers clothes for her because she is still the same weight.

  • are you and you H small people? What does the Pedi say?
  • dd is tiny.  she was in some 12m shorts last summer (at 2 1/2).  She's 3, and 26lb, 36in.  She's tiny... but gonna be.

ds is 18m and 23lb 8oz ,32 1/4 in.  I'm predicting this problem in our future. he's in 18m jeans only b/c he wears cloth diapers and he has a long torso.  But he's by far not a big kid. He has some 12m shorts that look big... hoping he'll wear them this summer since they were too big last summer.

don't feel bad about it. it just seems like there isn't a ton of variety in size for young kids. I can never find slim sizes... and there are slim, reg and husky toddlers out there.  where these sizes went are beyond me.   oh well.  dd is lucky, she can wear sundresses all summer (last year was wearing some 12-18m ones.. I'm hoping to get her in the 2T ones this year).

  • If he eats well and is healthy, please please try not to worry about it.  (I know, easier said than done)  But they do slow down, otherwise they'd be 13feet tall and 400lbs.  He's more active, his metabolism is regulating - and his next growth spurt he'll probably skip right over 3T and be in 4T.  I know Sam isn't exactly tiny (ok, she's a brick) but in the past year, she's gained 3lbs.  They just reshape as they grow - less belly, more leg & torso.
  • Is he tall? ?DD has clothes that she can wear from 2 years ago! ?She just keeps getting taller and thinner. ?I'm sure he's just a growing, active little boy :-) ?What percentile is he in for weight/height?
  • No! As a matter of fact he was 8 lbs 13oz at birth, and that was at 39 weeks gestation.

He had horrible reflux so we used to pass it off as that. He's almost totally outgrown that though, and as soon as he started eating solid food, we realized what a little piggy he is. It's not uncommon for him to eat more than me! Seriously, I have no idea where he puts it all. And we have to be really careful when he's sick, too. He can't afford to not eat for a few days so we always have to give him Pediasure for several days when he's able to eat again. He weighs 32 pounds. He's just barely gained 3 pounds in the last 1.5 years.

  • I totally agree with Halo! I don't think they are making toddler clothes too well. B is going on 3 and  a lot of her 24 mos stuff doesnt fit at the waist but is usually short for length.

I'm sorry you are upset buit if he eats fine, he's healthy and your pediatrician isn't worried, I'd try not to worry. He looks perfect to me!

FWIW, my ds is wearing the same size 2T shorts for the THIRD year in a row. I bought them the summer he was 2 y/o, he wore them when he was 3 y/o and now at 4.5 y/o he'll still get a full summer's worth of wear out of them again. I didn't even have to adjust the waist this year- they still fit him just as well as last summer. (He's wearing his 2T shorts in my sig and that picture was just taken a week ago!)

As long as he's healthy, (is the ped concerned about his weight gain?) you might just need to accept that's part of who he is. Believe me, I've lamented the same thing (last summer DH accidentally dressed my then-3.5 year old in his brother's size 6-9 month shorts. And they fit.)

I always say that we choose to focus on the things about Ethan that ARE big: his heart and his brain. Big Smile

  • 32 pounds sounds great to me!!!  DS will be 4 in June, I had him at the doctor last week and he weighed in at a whopping 30lbs. 1/2 oz, and that was fully clothed with his shoes on.  I don't think he sounds TOO skinny at all.  He sounds perfect to me!!!  I think the clothing sizes can be a little skewed. . .DS will be wearing 2T shorts again this summer.  He did wear 3T pants all winter, but needed them for length, I had to adjust the heck out of the waists.  I say as long as he is a healthy eater no worries.  We do a lot of milkshakes in our house to try to pack on the pounds, but it just doesn't work as well for him as it does for me (ha, ha, ha)!
  • My dd has always been really small and still is pretty small.  Last year her younger sister went on whole milk so I gave it to my older dd too.  After drinking it for about 6 months she started to fill out.  She's been on it for almost a whole year now and doesn't look nearly as skinny as she used to.  Maybe it's worth a try????
  • I don't think 32lbs is too thin for 3.5yrs old.  My DD #1 is 4.5 is very tall for her age & weighes 36.  She is a little boney but not too skinny at all.  Clothes are weird & can fit oddly but don't worry.  Sounds like he was a big baby if he weighed 29lbs at 2--that is quite a bit more than my 2yr old.  Sounds like he is just thinning out & losing the baby fat--most kids do that..often earlier than 2yrs old -- mine did from 1 to 1.5yrs old.  Ask the pediatrician.  I don't watch what my kids eat (I allow ice cream, juice, full-fat dairy, etc) so maybe just let him have more fattening stuff once in a while--he'll be fine.  Good luck.

We switched him to whole milk also when DS2 went to milk 2+ months ago. I haven't seen any change so far, but maybe it will make a difference long term.

Thanks everyone, I do feel a little better that at least he's not alone. I'm PMSing something awful today so I know that has a lot to do with it.

We don't currently have him with a pedi, he does family practice with me and DH. I've been thinking about changing him to the same pedi as DS2, so maybe this is just one more reason to add to my list.

Well I will just ditto what everyone else has already said. I don't know how any ?toddlers fit into pants at any normal store. The only reason DS can wear pants at all is because of his giant cloth diaper butt. And even then he wears 6-12 month stuff most of the time. When we vacation and he is in disposables, his pants literally fall around his ankles so I have to roll the waistband and they still fall off half the time. I really don't know what he will wear when he is potty trained because I can't imagine pants fitting him with no giant diaper butt. He is not even 20 lbs yet. The 12-18 month shorts I have bought this year go to his ankles and looks like they will could fit him for the next 2 years at least.
  • Our DD is also very tiny weight wise. She's 18 months old and 9 month clothing barely fits her (it's loose). She just went to the pedi last Friday and he's not concerned (even tho she's at the bottom of the percentiles for weight).
  • He's bigger than my 3 1/2 year old who wore 18 month pants all winter long!

She JUST is tipping the scales at 30 lbs.

She will be wearing 2 T's this summer as well.  Mitch will ALSO be wearing 2T's.

The clothes definately needs more elastic in the waists...or more adjustable pants.
