IUI#6 a bust...moving onto IVF

OMG I never thought I'd say that. Never! I'm 31 years old, and I need IVF? My mother had IF problems but she got pregnant with me on clomid!

I'm not upset (yet) I sort of saw this coming although considering AF arrived on 14dpiui, I thought I had a better shot this month than any of the previous months as she use to come 2 days earlier.

I'm just so afrad of IVF; the procedure, the meds, the COST!, the ER/ET, bed rest, taking time off from work (not having work find out), plus the 2ww with an IVF cycle and of course the no guarantee that it is going to work.Plus the fact this is the "last resort" before adoption scares the crap out of me.

If the insurance helped us out a bit, I wouldn't feel AS nervous but it's a huge step!

For those of you who did IVF after your failed cycle, how long did you wait? Of course I have the consult, etc but I'm wondering if I'd start in May or June. Also for you girls that pay OOP, what did the "pre-IVF" tests cost you or was it part of your "Package"?

Thanks!

  • I dont have any IVF experience yet. Although we are looking for ways to pay for a cycle. Im 28, at least for 2 more weeks, and the thought of needing IVF scares me too. I just wanted to tell you that I am sorry you have to go thru this..It isnt fair.  I wish none of us had to go thru this. Take care of yourself.

  • I totally understand where you are coming from. Unfortunately, IF does not care what age you are. I am 25 and my ONLY option was IVF-no TI with injectables, no IUI-straight to IVF.  A lot of women get pregnant with Clomid but I personally think of it as a waste. Sorry you need IVF but hopefully you only need one cycle. The procedures are not all that bad and you're job cannot ask you why you need time off for medical reasons. As for the costs, it's huge decision and that's something to consider as there is no guaruntee.
  • I think your fears are pretty common. I am not sure age should have that much of a factor in fear, at 37 I never imagined being here either. IVF is scary because there is so much involved plus it signifies the end of the line for many of us. But once you start the process and take it all day by day, it really becomes more routine then anything else. ER and ET are really pretty easy, a lot easier then I thought it would be my first time. Besides some cramping after ER, you should not be in much pain. ET is just like an IUI.

As for how long it took us to go from our failed IUI to IVF, I really can't answer, I had a vacation planned for a couple of months after our last IUI so we decided to just wait to start.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • Thanks...I'm sorry I hope the age comment did not offend anyone...wasn't meant to, just you never think that may be your only option to have a baby...

Thanks girls...good luck to us all!

  • I'm so sorry for your BFN.  It never gets easier!  We got our last BFN from IUI #4 in January.  Since we're OOP we had to take a break to save a bit, relax with no meds and for me to get my lap/hys done and recover from that.  We are doing the May cycle.  You should be able to get into that and for sure the June if you wanted.  I always tell people there's no real "timeline" for how long you wait.  It has to be a decision you and DH feel comfortable with.

I am so nervous too, but I agree if insurance helped I at least wouldn't be so nervous about the money aspect!  My pre-IVF tests were just a bunch of b/w which was covered since sent to an outside lab (hormone levels on CD3, Hep B and C for DH and I, HIV, etc) an updated PAP test and HYS.  All in all it wasn't too costly.  It was not a part of my package though.  But like I said most was covered by insurance.  Especially when the HYS is labeled as diagnostic.

Let us know when you decide on a cycle.  Maybe we could be cycle buddies again!  :)  My estimated ER/ET date is the last week of May.

  • Thanks Sara, I'll def be in touch. I love your siggy picture :)
  • My last failed IUI was at the beginning of this month (IUI was in Feb, AF in March) and I will likely start lupron before my next period if insurance comes through in time, otherwise it will be one more month. Since we aren't OOP, I think it was easier for us to jump right into it and really, I am so sick of waiting.

  • I was OOP and none of the pre-IVF bloodwork, saline sonogram, trial transfer, etc. were in that quote.  We actually got our IVF prepayment letter the day I started my job that will have IVF coverage for our procedure.  $17,170 (without meds) and an extra $240 to accupuncture on the day of transfer.  I about had a heartattack!!!  The only thing I got our old insurance to cover were the pills (valium, that steriod thingy, the antibiotics, bcp, etc.).  As for timing, we have to do an IVF class first at our clinic before they will schedule, and did that the last Monday in February which cleared us for their next available cycle which I started bcp a week ago with ER the week of April 27th.
  • I'm sorry. Good luck with IVF.
  • We went from IUI straight to IVF and skipped injectables.  I figured since I wasn't having any luck with the IUI's and meds, it was a waste of money to do injectables when I could just put it towards the IVF.  We had our IVF consult appt. this month and they are currently in a "down time", so they scheduled me to start the injections in April, and my ER/ET in May.

As far as cost, we are all OOP, our estimate was around $17k also, which I believe included the meds, but may or may not have included the ICSI, which I think was around $250.00 more.  My RE also requires you to pay IN FULL before they do anything, so keep that in mind.

My only pre-IVF testing was pretty much everything I had already done for the IUI (annual exam, Hepatitis, HIV, HSG, semen analysis, etc.), they did do 1 ultrasound the day of our appt. also.  None of that was not included in the $17,000, that was all extra, but I had paid for that before our appt. during the IUI process.

Now,  I'm contemplating acupuncture, but the acupuncture Dr. recommends 2 cycles a month for 3 months.  $90 per session ($540 total).....again, more OOP.  So, I'm not sure if I'll do that or not, my RE didn't say anything about needing it, so I'm still trying to decide.

Hope that helps, feel free to contact me anytime.
