Breastfeeding

Why does he tolerate the bottle better than my boob?

When I nurse DS, I pull him off every 5 minutes to burp him but he still almost always spits up.  When he's fed a bottle of BM, he doesn't spit up at all.  He doesn't seem to be bothered by spitting up but it bothers me b/c I know he can eat without doing it.  I don't want to move to EPing b/c of this, any suggestions?

  • I had this same problem and it was due to my forceful letdown. ?That was at the end of me attempting everything in the book for other issues as well so I have been EPing since 6 weeks (not to advocate that or anything - don't do it unless you absolutely have too)

  • Could he be overeating? My milk comes out pretty fast. If I let DS eat too long he spits up. If he starts pulling off, I'd offer it once more and stop when he pulls off again and see if he's still acting hungry. How many ounces does he eat in the bottle?

  • Do you hold him more upright with the bottle? If so, try nursing in a more upright position.

  • He eats about 5 oz from the bottle and I've tried the upright positions.  It's really hit or miss.  I really think that I have a forceful letdown.  Ugh, so frustrating.

try the suggestions on kellymom.com about forcefull letdown, it does get better. Pull him off and let it spray into a cloth for a few seconds so its not drowning him--that helped me a lot. Keeo trying before you switch to eping--its much harder imo.

just a thought, ds got confused with the flow of the bottle bc it comes out immediately with the bottle and not on me, so he would get impatient, we stopped the bottle for a few wks and it helped a ton! GL
