Success after IF

Speaking of pet peeves....

I have a question for you grammar experts about the apostrophes. I apologize in advance but I'm an accountant so numbers are my specialty, not grammar. I know you don't use one when making a word plural, but what about to show possession? That's where I get confused. For example, if I am talking about my husband's truck, wouldn't there be an apostrophe? Or is that wrong? TIA!

  • Yes, an 's is to show a contraction (there's) or a possessive (husband's).  But if you had multiple husbands, you wouldn't use an apostrophe.  Then again, you'd have other issues to worry about in that case too. ;)

  • Thank you alchris! I was pretty sure about that, but I think the problem is I always want to make things possessive, even when they're not. KWIM? I can't think of an example now, but I know it happens often.

We both have the same pet peeve about the op not responding to a reply, so I'm making sure I do. LOL.

  • No problem!  I see people type "Mom's of toddlers" or something like that all the time, for example.  Of course, "Mom's toddlers" would refer to the toddlers of a mom, and "Moms' toddlers" would refer to toddlers of moms (plural), but "Mom's of toddlers" is flat-out wrong! :)

And no problem if you hadn't responded -- my response above hardly took me an hour to type as I've done in the past for some in-depth questions, hee hee! :)

That's a good example. I think I get it now. I know what you mean about the short vs. long response, but it's always nice to get a thank you or be acknowledged right? OK I'm done and signing off now. By the way, I love the new siggie pics of your daughter. So adorable! Goodnight and thanks for the grammar lesson.
