Oakland Macomb OB ladies....

Did any of you do the genetic screening that included the ultrasound?? DH and I are contemplating doing this or not.  Is the ultrasound internal or external? They told us this is the only way we will get an ultrasound before the 20 week gender ultrasound.  TIA!

Re: Oakland Macomb OB ladies....

  • We opted for it.  The way my insurance works, the screening didn't cost us anything, so we figured "why not?"  I was too impatient to wait 20 weeks.  The u/s is external and it's done at the fetal imaging center at Beaumont (same with the 20 week one- that was one thing that seemed odd since they have a u/s tech on staff!).    I'm actually really glad I got it done because it was the only time I really got to see a full picture of him from head to toe and since he was still little, you could see him bouncing around and he even did a flip :)  By 20 weeks he got stubborn, folded in half and hid.  It took 3 seperate trips to get the proper measurements and even then it was a struggle.  I never really got a good picture for those u/s.  I had weekly u/s the last trimester because I was high risk, and at that point he was too big to really get a full body shot.

BTW- how did your appointment go?  I hope you liked the office!

Oh, I am so glad to hear it is external.  I didn't want to have an internal one if I could help it.  My appointment went great!! Dr. Valice was very nice and caring, he answered all my questions and made me feel comfortable.  All the staff members were so sweet.  We were in and out of there within 1.5 hours, which is more than I can say for my old OB.  I couldn't even get out of there within 2 hours for an annual exam!!!  I also love that the gowns are cloth!!  No more paper!!  I know that is silly, but it keeps you so much warmer!!  DH was laughing at me when I put the gown on and I had to explain to him that normally they are paper and don't even stay shut!!!

It was a little nerve racking at first because they bombard you with the genetic testing questions and that was something I never even thought of.  I am way to impatient to wait until week 20 too, so I really want to get a peak in there now!!  Thank you so much for your recommendation to the office and getting back to me with the testing.  Enjoy your day!!

  • I'm glad everything went well with your appointment.  The genetic testing can be pretty daunting.  I'm actually surprised they don't mail out an informational packet prior to your first meeting.  That testing has to be done around 13 weeks, so that's why they kind of push it on you at the first appointment- there's just not too much time.  Have you checked out the trimester boards on here?  That's a really great place to get more information.  Stuff like the genetic testing is talked about pretty frequently there, so you can get a lot of information that way.  I found it helped me be better prepared, so I had a good idea of what to expect throughout the pregnancy

  • I've been seeing Dr. Love for awhile and just scheduled my first appointment for mid April.  What do they do at that time.  It doesn't sound like much.

My hubby can't make it to every one so if it isn't anything special I don't want him taking time off work.

Sorry to take over your post.

Oh, I am so offended you took over my post ; )  Just kidding of course.  At my first appointment, they took blood, about 9 vials, did a vaginal exam and pap, got my weight, asked DH and I some genetic history questions, answered all my questions, and discussed the genetic testing with us. It was very reassuring to talk to the doctor and nurse.  They said the rest of the appointments would be fun.  They said the first one is routine stuff, but after that there are heartbeats to be heard and stuff like that.  DH really didn't need to be at the first appointment, but he had the day off, so he wanted to come.  He will definitely be coming to the next one because we should be able to hear the heartbeat : )  Good luck, let me know if you need anything else!!

  • No.  I didn't do any of the genetic stuff -- amnio, nt scan, cvs, etc.

Our view was, we're having these babies regardless, and they only give you a percentage chance that the baby could have something wrong with it, so we didn't want to spend the rest of the 9 months worrying about what could be.

I had external u/s beginning at 12 weeks (because of the twins), though  I don't know how they'd do it for the test -- that's something you might want to ask them.  Internal u/s aren't bad though -- a little embarassing maybe, but not painful at all.

  • Don't know if I'm late on this or not.  We opted to have it done since our insurance covered it.  I did the blood work and external scan in the middle of March and will have my second blood draw soon.  It was the only way I would have gotten a scan (although I got an unplanned one this week due to a scare).  I am a worry wart and the test did cause me to worry before and after.  I don't know if it was really worth it for me personally.  Also, you will not get the final results until your second set of blood tests come in.  The time span for me is almost a month.
