Moms - talk to me about diaper bags

I am a bit of a confessed purse wh0re and have too many to count.  I really want a fancy diaper bag (current obsession is Mia Bossi) but as I look at all of the diaper bags out there I realize I have no idea what it is I should be looking for in terms of functionality.  I hear a lot about getting a backpack style bag to keep my arms free and I get that I do, but I don't want to.  So beyond the strap style -- what is important to you?  If you could go back and start over would you pick your same diaper bag and why?  And do you end up with needing more than one anyway?

Re: Moms - talk to me about diaper bags

  • Personally, I love messanger style bags so I got the skip hop dash (and loved the half off at BRU :)).  For me, I wanted something DH would actually carry and something that I liked the looks of. I also wanted something smaller.  If I had a huge bag, I would overpack, so a smaller bag keeps me in check.  Plus, since my purse is small, I can put it right into the diaper bag - another plus for me.  To be honest, I picked a bag that I liked the looks of and went with it.  I just made it work for me, you know?  Maybe that is why people end up with several bags?  We did get one from the hospital and we plan to pack it with clothes, diapers, etc and leave it in the car, as an emergency bag.
Does this help, sorry if it is all rambling...

  • That is helpful.  The other bag on my list is a messenger style that DH says he'll carry although I have my doubts.  I worry about overpacking and I also wonder about carrying a purse as well/in addition so I'm interested to hear that you still carry yours.  Off to check out the skip hop bag.

  • You want something to hold bottles, baby food, bibs burp cloths, diapers, wipes, clothes and toys in a neat organized fashion.  BuyBuy Baby has a huge selection of diaper bags.

  • I'm not sure what I'm going to get either & I also want something cute/fashionable (I like a lot of the petunia pickle bottom & also oi oi & kate spade) but useful too & I'm not quite sure what that means yet either :).

I am probably going to get MH his own backpack style b/c he would not really want anything that looks remotely like a diaper bag & he likes backpacks a lot. I don't, unless they're sort of unconventional backpacks (don't look like what I carried my books in for all those years, if that makes sense)... I think I'll probably look for something that can change styles so I can wear it over my shoulder if I want but if I really want my hands free, it can go on my back. Not sure if there are many out there like that....

  • ebags.com also has a ton of diaper bags. i bought a small backpack from them years ago and loved it and their service.
  • Can't say for sure yet, but I fell in love with this company and their hobo style. (I'm a bag girl too and love hobo).

  • Not a mom yet but a fellow purse wh0re :-)

I got a fleurville messenger style bag. DH got an sling back type bag from pottery barn kids. Of course I've since found this bag that I love (also b/c it comes with a matching clutch that fits inside or can be grabbed to go):

I'm just not sure the straps would be long enough. I really wanted something with one strap that could go cross body b/c I figured 2 shorter straps (like many of the coach bags) would drive me nuts if the straps kept falling down. Especially in the winter with a bulky coat, car seat, diaper bag, purse and anything else I might have!

  • I love the OiOi bags and had one on my registry for a few weeks and just changed it.  I can't believe this is what I'm worrying about LOL.  I'm going to take a look at all your suggestions though and see if I can come up with anything that I love.

  • I too wanted something chic and trendy so I went with a petunia pickle backpack and now I'm not too sure it was the right choice...thinking of switching to the free hospital bag.....the petunia is very bulky and hard to get into in a hurry...at least for me..I love the look but not sure of functionality.....
