Names for "grandma"

Just wondering what you are going to have your mothers called when baby comes.

Are you picking out what you want your child to call their new grandma or is the grandma picking out what she wants to be called?

I am just asking because my MIL has picked out a name she wants to go by and I cannot stand it, but I will go with it if I have to.

Re: Names for "grandma"

  • Never thought about it, but I guess I should ask them.

So, I am dying to know.  What does she want to be called?

  • Loading the player...
  • We're stuck with Grammie b/c H's sister's kids coined it.  That and Papa.  I would've gone with something else but what can you do?
  • We asked all the grandparents what they wanted to be called, and they all chose normal names, nothing weird:

    DH's mom:  Grandma

    DH's stepdad:  Grandpa

DH's dad:  Grandpa (not sure how we're going to differentiate between the two)

My parents passed away when I was little and I was raised by my grandparents, so DH will call them by the names I called them:  Grandmother and Granddaddy.

Great grandparents will be Bubby (it's Yiddish) and Abuela & Abuelo (they're Cuban)

  • Both of our mothers will be Grandma. DH's mom wanetd something totally off the wal because she's "too young" to be called Grandma and DH shot that down right away. My mom wanted to be Grandma.
  • My mom wants to be NaNa. MIL doesn't care. My nephew calls her Grandma, but I think she should be called Gran. I may try to work that in myself. hee hee.
  • My parents will be Mimi and Grampy because that's what my niece calls them.  If Conor changes it, that's fine, too.  Not sure about DH's parents - I'll leave it up to them.
  • I don't know what my Dad wants to be called but my mom says "Grandma" makes her feel old so she wants to be called "NaNa."

FIL will be pap or pappy (not the first grandchild on that side so the other kids have already established what to call him, yay!) MIL is deceased. :(?

  • My mom will turn 40 in Aug. She has been on the whole "I'm too young to be a grandma" since we announced the bfp. She wnats to be called 'Grace' in Italian. LOL. I told her it was on her to teach dd how to say it and such. I can't even pronounce it. However, I'm guessing the other grandmas will just be grandma. Although, mil is called mememaw by our  neice, so I don't know if dd will pick up on that too or not.
  • My mom chose Mom Mom and Pop Pop. I wasn't crazy about the names but didn't feel like fighting at the time. When DS started to actually say them, it was cute.

  • My future MIL wants to be called Ganny, which is what my FI called his grandmother (father's mother), but I don't see her as a Ganny at all, the?original?Ganny was always so strict and stern and my MIL is the exact opposite. I told her that we'll call her whatever DD ends up calling her.?
  • My mom and dad: Grammy and Gramps (Grammy was my mom's grandmother who she was close to)

MIL: Passed away 8 years ago :(

FIL: Is STILL telling people he wants to be called G-Diddy and he'll have his little Izzy. I think it's funny, DH is annoyed by it, lol.

He'll probably end up being Grandpop to our Bella.

  • For my parents my DD calls them grammy and grandpy (or best friend).  My niece calls them grandma and papa.

For my ILs my DD calls them grandma and grandpa.  My nephews call them grandma and papa.

I left it up to my DD to call them whatever she wanted and didn't necessarily go with what they wanted.

  • Our families are pretty boring.  Everyone seems to be Grandma and Grandpa, even my stepmom and stepdad.
  • my mom is grammie.. his mom is nana.

ILs are Nana and Pepere... MIL refused to be Memere... which I like better than Nana... we will see what the kids end up calling her!

My parents haven't told us if they prefer specific names. My IL's, who are from Sri Lanka, will be lokuama and lokutati. Basically, grandma and grandpa in their language.

  • It began as a joke, but we now refer to my mom as Banana.  Geeked

As for his mom, no idea.  She has requested NOT to be called "grandma" but hasn't said what else she would like, so we're thinking we'll let our daughter figure out what to call her.

  • My ILs chose their own names and my nephew learned to call them that.  They are Mimi and Grandpa.

My parents also chose their own names and are Noni and Poppy.

Great grandparents are what DH and I called them--Nana and Grandpa.

I think Ninny is hilarious!  She chose a name for herself that means "stupid"?!  :)

  • MIL has 3 other grandkids and goes by grandma and FIL by granddaddy.  This will be the 1st grandchild for my parents (I am an only child) so they are picking their names out. They have to be called by it so they should pick their names.

  • My mom will be 50 and refuses to believe she's old enough to be a grandma Huh? so she has demanded the baby calls her Nana (which I like so I don't care)

    My dad: Grandpa

MIL & FIL: Grandma & Grandpa

    My Grandparents: Grandma & Papa

  • my mom and dad are Nana and Poppa

MIL and FIL Nunna and pops...i absolutely hate those names...she found nunna on the internet...she is sooo wierd...and DH calls his dad pops so its just annoying cause its like FIL is both of their dad

  • my mom will be "mia" and my grandmother will be "gg" for great-grandmother and my dad will be "popi."  i suppose my FIL will be "pop" because that's what he insists i call him (don't ask) and i have no idea what my MIL will be called.  i'll leave that up to her.
  • My ILs are so traditional that they would only go by "grandma" and "grandpa."  My mom wants to be called "Momo" (I guess that's a name for grandma in some culture somewhere), I like the name Papa for my dad.  I thought that the kid would come up with some creative.
  • We tried doing this, picking a name that DS would call his grandparents but most didn't work out.  He ended up calling them whatever he could and they stuck.

My mom  wanted to be Grammie Sue... She is now Ama (ah-mah), the name my DS gave her.  My MIL didn't have a prefrence, but DS calls her Amm (like Ama with out the last -ah).  The grandpas get called Papa because Grandpa was too hard to for DS to say when he was little.  My Grandma wanted to be Great Grandma, but she is now just Grammie.   the only person that picked her name is my Dad's mom.  She is Gigi and DS could say that, so it stuck.
