why say tuna fish and not just tuna?

I think it's an American thing.

    When I hear tuna fish I think of the canned variety and when I hear tuna, I assume it is like a tuna steak on the grill that you can order anywhere from rare to well done.

    tuna = seared ahi, sashimi, tuna steaks etc...

    i totally order it well done. same with my steaks. i can't see pink or i freak.  i think because i was vegetarian for so long, i don't like to see the blood.

    I agree it's regional.

    My dad's family is from the Midwest and says tunafish. My mom's is from Philly and says tuna.
