how do nursing tank tops/nightgowns work...? (yeah i know, should be obvious ;)

so i'm about to order a tank top and nightgown so i have a couple pieces to start out with... and i feel dumb as a sack of hair but i am just not getting this... i hate when the pics are confusing (ie not explicitly showing how it works)

specifically this, item A - the shot where it seems to show how it works still shows the boob covered with another layer of fabric...?

and this, item B - i don't even begin to understand... do you have to pull the sleeves all the way down over your arm...?

any suggestions for other pieces that have worked for you guys? who would have thought it would be so hard... lol and i can't go to the mall, etc. b/c i am literally incapable of standing/walking that much at this point, even though i'm off bedrest now.

Ok so Item A, you lift the part up that they show, and then there is a slit that opens up to expose the nipple.

The seond one I'm not sure. haha.

To be honest I didn't like nursing bras and or tanks, I didn't have any gowns, I ended up just pulling the whole shirt up, but had I ended up breast feeding longer I probably would have gotten used to bras and tanks, I just felt like the slit didn't expose enough and kept slipping back closed over DS mouth.

Where the fabric line is on the first one is actually overlapping fabric so you can whip out the boob...there is an opening

The second one...you just pull one side over to the side of your boob?

I'm pretty sure that B you just pull the V-neck to the side. I have a pair of PJs (the green ones) from Motherhood that look like that. I'm not sure how A works.

I've noticed that I'm pretty warm at night, so I'm actually ditching the bottoms of the PJs at night.

I would also get some kind of soft bra to wear under these items. My boobs are super sensitive and I need extra support.

I have no idea what's happening on that first one, but on the second you probably just pull one of the sides across your breast over to the side (know what I mean?). They're both really cute!

As far as nursing tanks, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my nursing tank from Target (Gillian & O'Malley brand). I wore them mostly at night to bed with shorts or pants. They're super comfy, soft, and they didn't shrink at all in the wash.

I have a couple of gap nursing gowns like the ones shown. The first you will lift up the first layer of fabric, underneath will be another layer with holes cut into it to show you nipple and a little more of the breast. I love the ones I have. The other one should have stretchy enough fabric to push down a side and expose a breast. My version of this one got a bit stretch out at the end, but they are comfy, and nice in the beginning because you are nursing and exposed all the time.

Other people already covered how they work, but I have to throw in that I feel like the money I spent on nursing tanks and pjs was wasted. (And not because I gave up BFing.) None of the styles exposed enough boob. They kept slipping back into the babies' faces and getting in the way. I ended up ditching them all in frustration. Also, they didn't hold nursing pads in place enough which was annoying.

What I do recommend highly though, is the nursing sleep bra from Motherhood. It looks like a criss cross. Super comfortable, stretchy enough to push all the way out of the way. I wore one pretty much 24/7 for the first 5 weeks. The link is below (thanks to Skoorb for the instructions even though I still don't have it totally right!)

Agreed with the others! On the first you can see a little slit on the bottom layer; that slit should open right up. On the second you just pull the fabric down..nothing fancy there. Having said that, I just wear regular PJs and pull the whole top up -- I tend to leave my PJs on a lot at home since it's so easy! It's really nice having nursing tanks and/or tops for leaving the house though, IMO. I wear one everyday, having all but retired my nursing bras last summer, admittedly. Have fun shopping!!!

ok so i am going to stay away from the "slit" thing b/c i'm afraid it won't get enough boob out there. the other option sounds ok...

after reading your advice, i ordered a bra and tank from target (there is a sale on nursing stuff right now btw and i also ordered a nightgown from nursinggowns.com b/c it looked so comfy i own zero nightgowns so even if it isn't perfect for nursing i think it will be good to have something to sleep in (i usually sleep in the buff.)

Piping in late. Last time around with my DD I BF for maybe 7 mos and I never went for any nursing clothing. I also found it easier to just pull the shirt up. Although, I may not want to be exposing my twin skin belly this time around- haha. I did invest in some good nursing bras though I can't remember the brand but they kind of fit like a sports bra and just snapped and folded over. I also had a Japanese Weekend bra that just pulled to the side that was SO comfy although I have small boobies and if you need major support this would not do the job. I think I'm going to purchase the hands free pump bra this go round too as my friends who used it loved it. I know you post wasn't on bras but there's my input on them in case you wanted it

I'm late too, but I'll put another plug in for the Target nursing tanks. I'm small (barely 34A pre-baby), and I'm not too much bigger now (maybe a small 34B), and I'm not going to even mess with nursing bras. I just have 7 tanks and wear them as shirts and bras. If I'm home, I just wear the tanks and pants and if I go out, I just throw a shirt over them. At night, I just wear the tank and underwear. It's great because the tank keeps your middle covered when you are nursing, so it hides the lovely twin skin.

I do have a couple of the Motherhood sleep bras, but I find I only wear them if all my tanks are in the wash!

One more thing I've learned...stick to black or white tanks. I have a couple gray ones and if you drip, it shows more. (I have messy eaters...;-)

ditto this! ?I have 4 Target nursing tanks and love them...I need to buy more! ?I also will just wear regular tank tops with the built in shelf bra, and just pull them down to nurse. ?But I also am pretty small, although I am bigger now that I am bfing!?
