Milk in pump tubing

I'm not finding the answer on Google -- Just now I was pumping and milk got into the tubing - this has never happened before.

I'm using the Medela Symphony, which I'm renting from the hosptial and *believe* is a closed system.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any tips on how to stop it from happening or what to do?

Re: Milk in pump tubing

  • Did your bottles overflow? Or are you just seeing little liquid drops in the tubes? If it's just like a mist in there.... it's likely water. When I used a symphony it was get in everytime I pumped. Just run the pump with only tubes connected and it will dry out.

If it's legitimately milk, I think you can rinse them or use on of the micro sterilizer bags.

And yes, it's a closed system.

  • I had that happen once to me too.  According to the instructions with my Medela, you can take the tubing off, rinse it in warm soapy water.  Make sure you rinse them thoroughly and then to dry them you can just hook them back up and let the machine run, or you can pour rubbing alcohol down the tubes to help them dry.
