Best shirt(s) for nursing in public?

I have not really nursed in public (the car is the closest I've come). But we are going to be flying in a couple of weeks, so I need to find a discreet way to do it. I will be sitting so close to my fellow passengers that I want to be sure and keep everything under wraps!

I realize I could get a nursing cover, but do you typically use a nursing tank with a regular shirt over it? A cardigan?

Please let me know what works best for you. I don't even own a nursing tank because I didn't like the Target one I bought...

I really need to get more comfortable NIP - it would change my days, that's for sure. I feel like I am constantly on the way home to feed him.

  • I usually wear a nursing tank with a cardigan or zip up hoodie. If you are fast enough, you can latch your baby without anyone seeing anything, and then just throw a burp cloth over your breast.  I also have a few nursing tops from Motherwear.  They are ok, but I think the nursing tanks are best.  You can also wear them under regular shirts so your stomach isn't exposed when you nurse.

  • I just use button down shirts.  Sometimes nursing tanks under the button down shirt.
  • I wear any old shirt- I use my nursing cover and just pull it up after it's on.  I nurse all over the place like this!

  • I usually wear tops with vnecks, or stretchy wide necks, so that I can pull it down rather than lifting up.  I don't wear nursing tanks, but I do wear nursing bras, sometimes with a tank over it for those times I have a turtleneck or something I can't get into from the top.  I do have a Peanut Shell nursing cover, which I love, and I NIP everywhere... another thing that works really well for me (when it's cool enough) is a wide scarf / pashmina - perfect for draping over his head when I latch him on.
  • I don't like the nursing tanks. I do a nursing bra, then a regular cami and a regular shirt. Pull up the shirt, pull down the cami -- belly and top both stay covered nicely.

  • I only wear nursing shirts and nursing tanks (or occasionally a nursing bra). I nurse in public all the time, almost every day. Some of my nursing shirts are from Motherhood Maternity, but their long sleeved ones are usually ugly. Most of my winter nursing shirts now are from Motherwear.com - they have a value line that's really affordable. I usually also use a blanket to cover up but the nursing shirts make it really easy.
  • I decided that if I had any chance of nursing successfully in public I was going to have to buy the right 'equipment.' I bought 2 nursing tops from Motherhood. After I determined I was going to be successful I started searching the internet for more (the Motherhood ones are not the most fashionable). I found that Old Navy has a handful of nursing tops that are cute and reasonably priced. They are only available online. I also discovered Gap sells nursing tops on their site also. I'm about to order a few more. Having a nursing top makes me feel so much confidant..I don't worry about being in public because it makes it so easy to nurse DD. I also use my Peanut Shell.?
