I do think several things about the catholic church are stupid. Lent being one of them. Rejecting gay people being another. Thirdly, their stance on birth control. I get the point, I know the meaning lent.... blah blah blah I've been through all of my sacraments.

I personally think it's INSULTING that a religion founded on the principle that "god loves everyone" is so hypocritical.

I just don't see the point of giving up something or doing something to better yourself has to be in the 40 days of lent. Isn't that the ultimate hypocrisy???? Shouldn't you just do good things ALL YEAR?? Yep.

which is exactly why I don't celebrate lent (besides the fact our church doesn't), only thank my parents on mother's day and father's day, and only tell my husband I love him on valentines day. i do those things year round.

Good gawd that post was worse than puppies and rainbows! Religion just should not be discussed in certain forums. As well as politics. BUT why is it not okay to express your opinion if you choose to engage in religious debates on pg/babies forum?? They voiced theirs. Bah! I'm not getting into this. I'll just get pissed off and I'm in a super good mood.

I tend to agree with the gist of what you're saying; I'm an atheist/agnostic (depending on when you ask me...), and there are a number of things about Christianity in general that I don't agree with. But if you go around calling them "stupid," you're not going to get your point across -- you're just going to get yelled at.

Lent is something you do for yourself, not for God. My denomination doesn't participate in Lent, yet my family chooses to do it. We do it because welike to sacrifice something difficult because Jesus had to make the ultimate sacrifice for us. Giving up sugar and TV for 40 days is the least I can do for my Saviour. It's a symbolic gesture that I take very seriousy and means a lot to me.

I don't really see where people were yelling at you. I really only saw a couple of responses to your actual question, and the rest were kind of related. I saw a couple of people saying its insulting for you to call it stupid, but they understand why you wouldn't believe it.. Just my thought on it

For each his own! I am Catholic, mind you I don't go to church every Sunday. But I always celebrate Lent and it never fails each year people want to criticize my choice.

But it is MY choice. So if you choose not to celebrate Lent, why is it so important to try to make others degrade another person's choice? Free country right?

You might think Lent is stupid, but for those of us who follow it, what you said is terribly insulting, and the people who "yelled" at you were stating their opinions as you stated yours. If you can dish it, you also have to be able to take it. I like you as a poster, just so you know

Pfft. Lent is hardly even in the top 10 reasons of why the Catholic church is stupid! I'm thinking #1 has to be telling people in Africa that condoms won't help them prevent AIDS.
