I was just watching the news and one of the top stories is about two babies switched when leaving the nursery. Two girls born with the same last name...were brought to the wrong mother for feeding/bonding time. They didn't realize it until the babies were brought back to the nursery and the families starting getting suspicious. And now the babies won't take their real mothers breast...and they both had to be put on formula. I would freak out!!!
Re: Switched babies at NYC Hospital...
Yikes!
This is why I am glad that
1) Our last name is super uncommon
2) Our hospital only rooms in (there isn't a nursery)
3) They check all the information on mom or dads bracelet and babies bracelet to make sure EVERYTHING matches up if they do take baby for tests and mom or dad isn't with them.
my hospital makes you check the baby's ID bracelet EVERY TIME they bring the baby to your room to make sure it really is your baby ... this should have been done.
babies can look a lot alike- esp when wearing those little hats all day long.
no matter how much you want to room in - there are times the baby will need to go to the nursery - for testing, etc.
i was thinking the same thing. If the baby had no problem switching to the wrong breast to begin with - why would there be problems switching back to the REAL mom whom they are born knowing how to smell for?????
looks like someone is looking for a really good reason to sue and get a lot of money.
I find this strange as well. I mean, if Salma Hayek can breastfeed some random hungry African baby, why couldn't two babies switch moms one time and go back to the right mom without incident?
This is our hospitals policy as well....that is terrible...someone should be in a lot of trouble!
Does anyone watch The Office?
If so do you remember the episode where Michael is throwing the office baby shower for Jan? Dwight is going through a mock labor with Michael to help get him ready. Dwight is laboring with a watermelon and as soon as the baby comes out he tells Michael to get his sharpie out and mark the baby with something only he would recognize in an inconspicuous place. Sounded crazy at the time but maybe not such a bad idea to avoid something as traumatic as this.
