MIL and weight gain

So...yesterday, my MIL asked me to go to dinner with her.  During dinner, she told me that when she was pregnant, the most weight she had ever gained was 9 pounds.  With DH, she gained 2 pounds, his sister 9 pounds, and his younger sister 3 pounds.

This seems pretty unrealistic, although I know that years ago, women were not supposed to gain as much, like today 30- 50 pounds is normal.  But 2 pounds total?  That would mean that she lost weight, which would be normal but she told me that she wasn't sick at all either.

DH says that she must be going crazy because he was 16 when his younger sister was born and he remembers his mom gaining a bunch of weight.

So, if she did only gain 2 pounds, I just can't wrap my head around how and if she made it up, WHY?  Seriously,   I think she just wants to make me think I'm crazy.

Re: MIL and weight gain

  • She's nuts.  Maybe she wants you to congratulate her.

My MIL once told me that she used to eat only popcorn for weeks at a time if she ever went over 98 pounds (she tells me these things knowing that I - even before being pregnant - am about 35 pounds heavier than that).

Maybe your MIL was on the popcorn diet too.

  • She's a nutjob.

  • Agreed- she is nuts.

If you look up one of those breakdowns of weight gain, you'll see weight gain you have no control over- baby plus placenta plus extra blood, etc.  Just that part is over 20 pounds, and then you are supposed to put on some reserves, depending on starting weight.  Two pounds is obviously very extreme, and would put a baby in danger!

My DH has a relative who keeps telling me her mother told her never to put on more than 20 lbs and how she only put on 19 lbs when pregnant. She's pretty obsessed with her weight anyway- so I told DH that neither of us will be telling her how much I gain no matter how hard she drills for the info. I plan to laugh off any question on how much I gained and just say, a bunch.

  • Sounds like something my MIL would say. I am a big girl to begin with and she was a twiggy-like model so there is a major difference there. I am worried she is going to say something. She also believe in a lot of crazy hippie diets (a new one every week or two) that involve lots of raw garlic and not eating the skins on almonds because apparently they are bad for you. Ugh.

Your mil was not healthy during her pg if that is what happened. She might actually believe what she is telling you which is a cause for concern.

  • When I was a kid, my mom told me that when she was younger she never weighed more than 110 but when she was pregnant with me she she got up to 135 (the weight I was at the time.)  Years later I happened to mention it to my dad and he almost fell out of his chair laughing.  He said when I was born she weighed 165!!!!!!!!

I think some people like choose to remember a completely different weight.

  • LOL!  I have already gained 2 pounds and I am sure it's all in my boobs!
  • she's nuts!  it's impossible unless you are very overweight to begin with. i think she must have miscalculated something there.. maybe 2 pounds per boob gain?

also, your doctor told you you can gain between 30- 50 pounds?  My doctor told me 25 - 35 :(   I'm not following it since i'm healthy and if i gain 40 i'm not crying over it, but just curious what other doctors recommend now...

  • I wouldn't doubt that she just wants to make you crazy! My MIL wouldn't be above doing that!
  • My MIL told me that something must be wrong with my baby because she was able to feel and see her belly move by 8 weeks.

  • was she overweight?  Both my sisters had GD and one gained 6lbs and another gained 9 lbs total.  They were at their healthiest while pregnant, and yes, they lost weight.

I am only to gain 10-15 lbs due to being overweight and my family history of diabetes.

If she wasn't overweight...I vote nuts too Stick out tongue

  • I don't see how she could only gain 2, 3, or even 9 pounds ... between the baby and all of the extra fluid she would gain around 10 at the very least. I would tell her 'my DR would kill me if I only gained that much weight'! My MIL tells me not to starve my baby and eat LOL

  • She is completely off her rocker.
  • The woman is nuts!  I went to the baby center site where you can enter your height and pre-pregnancy weight.  It then tells you how much you should gain (I'm sure take very loosely) and where the weight goes.  It says I'll gain 9 lbs from the fetus, placenta, and amniotic fluids alone.  There is no way she only gained 2 lbs!  Maybe she forgot the ending 0.

  • Was she a smoker?  I've heard stories of Dr.'s "back in the day" recommending smoking as an appetite suppressant so that pregnant woman would not gain too much weight.  Scary stuff.

  • My mom likes to tell me how I never once cried, smiled from birth, and only slept 8 hours a night with one nap.

I think that the 20 or 30 years may effect mother's memories.

  • MIL games. sounds like my wackjob MIL.

    I would call B.S. LOL :)

  • My MIL says crazy stuff like this all the time, too. One time she told me she gained a ton of weight with her 2nd kid, then lost 80 lbs, before getting pregnant with her 3rd... the problem with the story is that there is just barely a year between the two kids. So apparently she lost 80 lbs in about 12 weeks!

Of course, by her account, my husband was feeding himself solid food with a spoon at 2 months old!
