Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Giving newborn water...

A friend of mine has a week old baby and the pedi said to dilute the formula with water to help prevent gas.  Anyone else heard this I think its a little strange!

Re: Giving newborn water...

  • Have never heard of that....

We had to give DS a little water during his first couple of days because he wasn't urinating.  Other than that....?

  • DD was a little constipated when she was about a month old and my pedi said to give her a little water after her formula to help her go.
  • our pedi said absolutely NO water, that bfing should give him all that he needs....i thought diluting formula was dangerous for babies.

  • I posted this earlier in another post.  My doctor said that giving water to a baby under 6 months can lead to life-threatening problems.  Do not do this.

Old-school pedis recommended this.  Newer pedis don't.

  • My mom said that she gave me water when I was an infant...30 years ago....but said that it was to wash my mouth out.  Nothing to do with diluting formula.

  • we gave DD water in between feedings all the time because she was REALLY gassy.  The pedi said that was great.  We never diluted formula with it though. That I don't understand.

  • My pedi suggests a half ounce per month of age so at 1 month a half ounce at 2 months 1 ounce and so on
