XP: Introducing bottle - any tips?

We tried to intro a bottle to DD last night (Gerber NUK low flow nipple) and it took her FOREVER to drink 2.5 oz...like almost an hour! She's normally done nursing in 10 minutes when I feed her. In the beginning I know she wasn't getting anything when she was sucking because I couldn't hear her swallowing like she normally does. Do you think I need to use a different nipple - flow or brand? Or do you think there's a learning curve for her? When she was done eating she had this really strange look on her face like she didn't know what just happened...like she's never had to work so hard to eat before! I felt a little bad/guilty.

I'd appreciate any tips, suggestions, etc. you all may have. Thanks!!

  • Just stick with it. We started giving DS a bottle at about 6 weeks and it took him the same amount of time. Now he is so much quicker. Just like BFing they have to learn how to get milk out.

  • I tried the Gerber Nuk with DS, because its supposed to be more like the breast and cheaper than Avent bottles....and had the same problem - he would suck forever and not get anything or get it really slowly. The nipple we have has the hole on the 'side' of the nipple and not at the very tip of the nipple...is that what you have? I turned the nipple upside down from the way the directions said to use it, hole pointing down instead of towards roof of mouth, and it is much better - actually a little too fast I think, so I don't use that bottle much any more. The other problem DS has with that nipple is sometimes he sucks so hard he collapses the nipple (and can't get milk) and can only release if I take the bottle out of his mouth.
Married June '03. DS born Jan '09. DD born Feb '12. No, we didn't choose to be childless for the first 6 years, only the first 3.
