2nd Trimester

What I fear most...

is breastfeeding. I am so set on nursing my baby, but I keep getting negative vibes from people who WERE and weren't successful. wtf? At this point I'm not even fearing labor, just breastfeeding...any soothing words to share?

Re: What I fear most...

  • Oh boy, do I hear ya?!  I think pumping is the way to go, unless you have the time to devote to actual nursing.  I say screw everyone else, do what's going to work for you!  You know?  Good luck!

  • I was the same way with my daughter...and things went fine, there are a few things that will help, if the baby doesn't latch properly they can help you with that at the hosptial sometimes its  position thing, relax yourself when you are feeding, use lanolin after every feeding, and don't give up, if you stick to it you will succeed...Some have easier times in the beginning than others...but if its something that you really want to do just try it..it was an incredible bonding experience and I did it the whole first year and have no regrets...Hope that helps
  • I have nothing to say, I'll be a newbie myself but stop listening to those people. Don't start thinking that you may fail (all of us may fail honestly, that is a possibility), it won't help you a bit. We'll cross that bridge when we get there... but if you start feeling defeated then you probably won't even try hard enough to achieve it. JMO.

  • You just need to think positive. I did BF and w/ every problem their IS a solution... and to tell you the truth, it came pretty naturally and it wasn't that bad and any downfalls were made up ten fold when you had the connection and bond w/ baby.
  • Look into your local La Leche League chapter! That is what it is there for. Not only can you get support from other women who have had the same fears as you, it gives you an opportunity to meet other mamas in your area. I plan on going to a few meetings before the baby comes so that I can get acquainted. GL!
  • Haha!  I'm there with you!  I'm more afraid for the pain of bf*ing than labor!  (I know it makes no sense, but I can't help it!)  I keep thinking "it wouldn't be so bad if I put lidocaine on my nipples and my baby's mouth goes numb while attempting to feed right?"  haha!  I'm scared.

  • Women have been breastfeeding succesfully for 100 thousand years. Just because a few have decided they couldn't handle it...

I'm sorry, a good friend and ex roomate of mine has fibro and a few other pain related autoimmune issues, and she managed to go a year before drying up and giving up.

I know exactly how you feel. I swear that everybody around me it trying to talk OUT of breastfeeding. I don't understand but apparently I'm doomed to fail.

  • People are rude- it is NONE of their business what you want to do. Whether you or breastfeeding (which I plan to) or bottle feeding, that is up to you. Just stop listening to negative comments and if the people keep being negative, stop hanging out with them. Everybody thinks they know what's best but only you can decide what works for you and your baby.

I wouldn't let some dumb comments keep me from giving my baby what I feel is the best start to life. Take a child-birth class- they usually discuss breastfeeding or take a separate class. From what I've heard, some hospitals give babies sugar water in bottles or nuks in the nursery which can impede breastfeeding- make them aware that that is not okay with you.

Good luck! I've heard, if this helps, that after the initial pain of breastfeeding, it feels really, really good!!!
