We didn't have plans to go, but when Jack to a whopping (note sarcasm) 30 minute nap, I knew we would need to get him out of the house. My dad and I took him down there around 3ish and stayed until just after 5 and there was NO ONE in the kids area. We pretty much had free reign.
Kids under 3 have free admission, 3+ is $2 (I think) and adults are $5. Jack enjoyed his first corn dog, got to see the sights of the fair and tried to get some goat lovin'. Oh, he also really enjoyed the pig races.
The best part was when he walked into the petting zoo like he owned the place and said (to all the goat, deer, and even the kangaroo), "Hey, doooooogs!"
Re: PSA and AW: Austin Fair/ Rodeo
I just adore that little guy! He is too darn cute!!! I can totally hear him say "Hey, dooooogs!" and it just makes me want to squeeze him.
Cute picture!
How long will it be there, do you know? I have family in from Baltimore, so maybe we could take my niece tomorrow afternoon.

i want to say saturday is the last day.
how old is your niece? for toddlers thru preK, it would be worth it to check out the kids tent (free petting zoo, mini-John Deere trikes, pony rides ($4) and a cow), the pig races, and the livestock tent. older than that (and able to stay up later w/o getting fussy) and the rodeo might be worth a go. we didn't go on any rides, i didn't even check out to see if there were appropriate rides for jack. he was perfectly content hangin' w. the goats.
Too cute! I can't wait (yes I can buy you know...) wait for Little Dude to go to something like that!

fyi- there is another petting zoo that just opened up to the public much closer to us if you don't feel like driving all the way down 183.
i haven't been there, but was considering planning a gtg there at some point (in other words, i can't recommend it from personal experience, but for a 14 mo old, it might be worth avoiding the car ride and going to something closer). they are only open to the public on Mondays and Wednesdays, though.

If anyone goes, there are some really good yeast rolls to sample for free. I went back for seconds, minutes after my first because they switched people handing them out. ?It's in the same area as the petting zoo, kids zone.
ETA - Too cute MC!
Genius!
Those samples were too small, IMO.
Oh, other "insider" info. They sell water at all the food places for $3. Inside the kids area, it's $1 (milk and juice also available for the same price).

There is plenty of stuff for the little guys to ride. You can only buy a wristband for kids over 36" so you have to buy tokens for each ride and you have to ride most of them with them.
We got ourselves wristbands and then spent about $30 on tokens.
You could easily ride just a couple rides for less $. DD rode almost everything she was able to.
Wow, too adorable for words!
Sidenote - the rodeo is fun for adults as well! We took DH's mom and grandma last weekend and had a blast! Eli Young band played and they were amazing!
