Breast Feeding Class?

Is anyone who is planning to breast feed taking a class? I have considered it, but also feel like it may be more helpful to wait and figure our own individual areas of need and get help once the baby is born, if necessary.

Thoughts?

Re: Breast Feeding Class?

  • I am planning on taking one before the baby is born. I'm a newbie, I need it.

  • I'm not planning on taking one at this point.  I'm planning on saving my $ and getting a lactation consultant if needed.  But I remember some of the basics from nursing school, so I'm hoping that (and the info from the hospital after delivery) will be enough to get me started.

  • I think I am going to take the class...to learn mostly about pumping strategies...and breastfeeding is more than sticking your baby up to your breast...I want to know if I should bring my  husband or not...Our class paper says husbands are welcome and encouraged to attend...but I wonder if I would like it better on my own or if it would gain support and understanding from dh???

  • I took a breast feeding class when I was pg with my daughter and it was the BEST class that i took.  LOTs and lots of great things, and I learned a TON from it that I actually used in everyday life.  unlike the lamaz class, it was fun, but definetly didn't use much if any from it

  • I'll be taking one, and my DH will certainly be there. I think we both need to hear and learn all we can, so when I am sleep-deprived and potentially frustrated with bf'ing issues, I hope he may remember tips and tricks I may forget. Ya know?

Of all the classes we could take, I am most set on taking the BF one.?

  • I didnt' take a bfing class and it worked out great for me.  Check your hospital to see if they have a lactation consultant visiting the nursing mothers when you're in the hospital.  One came in to check on me and I was having a little issue - it was SOOO painful and I thougth dd was just latching onto the nipple instead of the area around it, but reality was, it just hurt.  Basically it takes practice and you have to keep at it, but your nips get use to it.  To get the baby to unlatch you put your index finger in between your breast and the corner of the babies mouth.  There - I saved you a hundred bucks Smile  ALSO - see if they have samples of Lanisoh in the hospital - one tiny sample tube was all I needed until I got use to bfing.

One pumping strategy is to pump while your dc is eating - their nusing stimulates your milk to flow much easier and faster than if you are to attempt to pump without them in the begining.

  • DH and I took the class when I was pregnant with DD.  Like the previous poster, it was the best class I took.  I learned so many tips and tricks that made a ton of difference I think with nursing my DD.  I am actually going to take the class again as a refresher because it's been a couple years since I've been breastfeeding. Our class was free through the hospital with their lactation consultants.

     HTH!!

  • I breastfed my first born for 10 months.  I HIGHLY recommend taking the class.  (it may even be covered by your insurance.)  It gave me a lot of things to expect.  If you are really commited to trying to breastfeed, I think the class is a good place to start.  It can really be a hard experience so as much knowledge and support you have, the better.  Most importantly, you'll learn different feeding positions and how to make sure your baby is latching on correctly (most important part!).  I was lucky...my son took to it really well.  It was still a learning process though and it was painful, especially since I was recovering from a csection.  My plan was to also see a lactation consultant but I ended up not needing to.  The nurses gave me enough ideas on what to do to help my body transition which was my hardest part.  You keep hearing that breastfeeding is the best thing you can do for your baby so I think all the effort you can make is great...go for the class and the lactation consultant.  It is worth the money too, especially if you can save from having to buy formula.  Good luck!!!

  • Oh, and I agree.  It's a great idea for DH to come too.  It gives him an idea of what to expect (that breastfeeding might not be as easy as he might think).  You're going to need his support!  Also, he might remember things that you might forget that could be important later...2 sets of ears are better than 1.

  • My cousin just had a baby in Nov. and she had signed up for a breast feeding class and then was on bedrest so couldn't go to it. ?She said the nurses in the hospital were really helpful for teaching her how to do it and that she didn't know if it would have even helped to have a class b/c she thought it wouldn't have made sense to her until she had an actual baby to do it with! ?But then of course I ended up signing up for the class anyway. ?I haven't gone to it yet though. ?FWIW my mom breastfed and kept recommending I sign up for it. ? ?
  • I am taking a class b/c it is dirt cheap.  I know you can not get the actual practice until the little one is born, but I hope to get a lot of info about storage, pumping, discomfort alleviation, positions, how long to nurse, etc...  Pretty much everything seeing as how I know nothing...lol.
