Babies: 0 - 3 Months

why does she poop so much?

we're breastfeeding (or trying) and dd is constantly pooping and we're of course changing diapers constantly - which has caused horrible diaper rash.

is this normal and what can we do to help her?

Re: why does she poop so much?

  • yes, definitely normal when babies are so young.... it will taper off soon. ?can you give her some time without a diaper on? ?

i'd also recommend triple paste, it's expensive but works wonders on bad diaper rash.

  • HA yes it's normal.  use a really thick diaper paste like butt paste or desitin. aveeno did nothing for me when he had bad diaper rash.
  • yep it's normal!  our DD slowed down around 6 weeks but seems to be picking up steam again, LOL, i've gotten very used to smelling thru her clothes to tell if she pooped.  of course i can usually hear her doing it, hehehe!

we have had good luck using Pampers Swaddlers New Baby diapers... the Huggies seem to be less absorbant so would probably result in more diaper rash.  we haven't had problems with Pampers and diaper rash in the 3 months we've used them.

  • My DD still poops all the time. It does lessen a little as they get older. Maybe let her lay on a towel for a bit with no diaper and "air out". If she is constantly soggy it's hard for her skin to dry out.

  • I started using the lasinoh wipes for breastfed babies and it has helped immensely.  DS had diaper rash so bad it bled.  A&D ointment helped it heal.

  • In addition to the creams, I would use Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive and use water and cotton balls instead of wipes until it clears up.  HTH!

  • Babies poop.  That is what they do.  Totally normal.  Give the baby some air time on the butt.  Do not put diaper rash stuff on her bottom unless the bottom area is completely dry (otherwise you trap the moisture and it makes it worse).  It will be messy, but keep the diaper off for a short bit.  It really does help.

  • Totally normal - kiddo pooped almost every time he ate at that age.  Changing dipes shouldn't give her diaper rash - it's leaving them on too long which could cause it.  I'd try switching brands of your dipes and wipes; maybe she's sensitive?  Or better yet, try cloth - we've not had even a trace of rash.

The pooping will slow down once she gets a bit older.

  • That happened to us too. My doctor recommended using an alcohol free wipe (or a damp cloth) and try vaseline on her behind. All the wiping causes the rash.
