1st Trimester

*VENT* Probably a dumb one at that...

Oh I know this is sooo to blame on the hormones and I'm not even mad, it's more of annoyed...

So all of my neices call my Mom " Memaw", instead of Grandma. My oldest neice started it and it stuck. So I am talking to my MIL today, (by the way, my MIL doesn't care for my mom...the feeling is mutual, however) and she says "I refuse to be 'Grandma'. I want the baby to call me Gja- Gja" I was like Gja-Gja?? What is that?? What if the baby calls you Grandma when it starts to talk? Are you going to say no, call me Gja-Gja?? I am all for cute nicknames, but we have to tell our child to call you Gja-Gja?? I know this would never have some about if my mom didn't get a nickname from my neices. (And if our child chooses not to call my mom Memaw, so be it, but she already has that nickname from the other grandkids, so it's kinda of natural...)

But really....Gja-Gja?? All I can think of is that Zsa Zsa Gabore lady's name..

  • Is this her first grandchild?  I think it's silly to impose a weird nickname on yourself simply because you are afraid of being a grandmother!

On a side note, my daughter calls my mom Nonny.  She does not want the baby to use this nickname for my mom.  Right now she is an only child and only grandchild.  We have all explained to my usually very logical 10 year old that the baby may very well call her Nonny because that's what the baby will hear her calling my mom.  We'll see how it all shakes out in the end.

  • I know this is going to make me sound reeeeeeallly dumb.... but I'm sitting here trying to say "Gja" and I can't figure out what the hell it's supposed to sound like. How in the hell will a kid figure it out???

  • I am Polish and my grandfather was Dzia dzia (pretty much sounds like Zsa Zsa- really close, but with more of the D sound at the beginning).    That is polish for grandfather.

  • My DH called one of his grandfathers something along those lines.  He was polish.  Perhaps Gja-Gja is some ethnicity's way of saying grandma.  Did you ask her about it?

Uh yea....no, it doesn't mean anything. She just feels she is too young to be "Grandma" so she thinks this is a young alternative...

My niece and nephew call my Mom "Grandma with the flowers" and my SILs Mom is "Grandma with the cookies".  While you may think the name is dumb, your kids might even come up with something dumber.  There is no way to predict what they will call her.  You can go ahead and refer to her as grandma when you talk about her, but she may go and refer to herself as Gja-Gja.  I would say try and go with the flow.  Hope this helps.

Nope...not Greek, not Polish...I could totally see that, but no. Just a name she made up!

  • My siblings and I call one of our grandmothers Gram, with the "a" being sounded out long, like in "lawn".  Don't ask why....I actually came up with it, since I was the first.  But our cousins call her Grandma.  Your child will call your MIL whatever he/she comes up with.  It might be even weirder than "gja-gja"...who knows!

  • I could see if it had meaning behind it, but if it is just some random name that she chose that is just strange! (PP:...the greek term for grandmother is spelled yiayia or yaya, not gja gja... just so you know! My husband is Greek, so I am familiar with the lingo Smile)

  • You should just tell her it's sounds like the polish word for grandfather and maybe she'll drop it.
